DS and a friend (age 9) got stuck in the elevator tonight, between floors. The fire fighters came and couldn't open the door; eventually the elevator guy came and was able to open it, and the kids were able to jump down. Now ds is very excited that he has an "adventure" to tell everyone at camp. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

A friend of mine the other day said it was illegal to let kids under 10 to ride in the elevator by themselves, in case they get stuck. Seems odd to me. Until she said that, I wouldn't have thought twice about letting my 5yo ride our very slow elevator in our small building down while I walked. (np) [ Reply | More ]

Interesting. Wonder if it's true. The fire fighters didn't say anything to me about this. The kids were taking out recycling, which they've done for several years. Never seemed like a problem. [ Reply | More ]

np: people are constantly trying to tell me that letting your dcs do things alone is "illegal" and that's simply not true. for example - it is NOT illegal to leave a 12 yo home alone for 5 minutes while you walk the dog or run to the store to pick up milk. it's not illegal to do that with a 9yo either. it may not be a good idea, it may be outside a parent's comfort zone, but it's not a crime. CPS is not going to get called about this. they are busy dealing with the family with the 9 yo who is responsible for caring for his 7yo, 5o, 4yo and 18 month old siblings all night every night while his single mother works. nP" sorry but that's nuts. I wouldn't let a small dc ride alone in an elevator. I guess you didn't grow up in a large city where you have seen anything could happen [ Reply | More ]

not np - did grow up in this city and 9yrs old is old enough to give small responsibilities to that encourage independenec, not saying let the kid ride bus or subway to school alone (that wasn't til I was 13 or 14) but seriously STOP coddling your kids [ Reply | More ]

Agree, Nine is not a small child. Elevator in their own building is fine. I wouldn't leave them alone and leave the building myself but in your own building when you're home is fine especially with cell phones. I was recently shocked to fine out most middle schoolers have to leave school for lunch. We'll have to prepare for that one. [ Reply | More ]

What if a strange delivery guy grabbed them or threatened them or flashed them while they were alone in that elevator? [ Reply | More ]

Well one, we have cameras in our elevators and a doorman who monitors them but also two, as much as I would love to I can't control everything and I have to accept that. While I feel I had too much freedom as a child I feel badly that we monitor our kids every minute, I can't help worrying that they're losing the ability to deal with life. [ Reply | More ]

NP here. My only concern would be what happened which is why I wouldn't let them. [ Reply | More ]

I must admit that if I leave my nine year old to go to the mail box etc I take my cell. I don't worry about sending her to get the mail in our building because again we have cameras etc and a door man. If she got stuck in the elevator she knows to ring the bell etc. I'm trying to give her more independence where I can. I don't want her to end up like several older kids I know who are unable to go to college etc because they're scared to leave their parents. [ Reply | More ]
