feeling a bit insecure - my sitter was here helping me out today and my 2 1/2 yo DS woke up from his nap sweaty and crabby and had a temper tantrum. She tried to console and reason with him and I asked her to tell him gently that she'd be waiting for him downstairs, and then leave him alone. She told me that she didn't know what to do because none of her 4 kids EVER had a tantrum (her 16 yo son confirmed this -- he'd never seen such behavior and he's the oldest). She told me it's b/c she was a FT mom (I work PT). So now I'm wondering if HER kids are abnormal, since I thought occasional tantrums were par for the course. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

oh, please. Has she ever sat for anyone else? If she doesn't know how to handle a tantrum she clearly does not have enough experience for the job. You are fine. Your child is normal. It has nothing to do with you working PT, FT, in or out of the home, whether you breastfed or provide juice. 2.5 year old kids don't know how to control their emotions. Not all throw tantrums but there is certainly nothing unusual about it. [ Reply | More ]

Gotta say - I would can this sitter ASAP. Who needs the lack of experience with a range of temperments and the lack of sensitivity that enabled her to talk like that to you. [ Reply | More ]

I hear you (i'm original poster) -- everything was fine til today! She's really great with him otherwise. She literally did not know how to handle a tantrum. I've met her 4 and they are VERY shy and sweet. The reason I hired her is b/c she's a mom of 4 and her children seem so happy and well behaved. Thanks all, at least i feel better that DS is "normal."
