How do you figure? Best case scenario of board, push back, taxi, take off, fly, land, deplane? What about the potential for waiting on the tarmac for hours before you even get to take off? [ Reply | More ]

If you don't then make sure it is dh who holds db for the whole flight. Having said that I flew with my ds at 1yo he wouldn't stay in his seat so it was a waste but I appreciated having the extra space. [ Reply | More ]

It depends on the demeanor of the child, imo. My oldest was always fine without a seat. But 2nd child was crazy - I needed to be able to strap her in - even though she screamed. At least she was confined and screaming and not running around. By the time we had #3 we felt the need to buy her a seat b/c we were outnumbered. [ Reply | More ]

And that would be a regulation that is opposed by the Pilot's Union and the Flight Attendant's Union. It is supported only by the airlines, who are afraid of losing revenue. Do you understand that force that can be generated by turbulence? You would not be able to hold onto your child in severe turbulence and you would be lucky if your child survived the impact if they were to hit their head on the cabin. [ Reply | More ]

Statistics put the odds of dying on a commercial aircraft flight at about 9 million to one. And when planes do crash, usually everyone dies, carseat or no. By way of comparison, the odds of a baby dying from being left alone in the bathtub are about a million times higher, but nobody seems to want to do anything about that… [ Reply | More ]

That is absolutely untrue. Most aircraft accidents do not kill everyone aboard. Only midair collisions almost always kill everyone onboard. Far more common are accidents involving turbulence, rapid deceleration, and runway exits. [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 07.01.08, 04:44 PM Flag

You are most likely to be injured on a runway exit upon landing, followed by a runway landing on takeoff, followed by turbulence, followed by mechanical failure, followed by pilot error, then collision. Death is far less likely than injury, of course. The specific odds depend on the nexus and the parameters. Most studies use all commercial (passenger, cargo, and other). [ Reply | More ]

The Pilots Union and The Flight Attendants Union want carseats. The Aircraft designers and manufacturers want carseats. The Airlines don't. It's a matter of lobbying, like everything else in this country. I'm not the only person who thinks that lap babies are dangerous. [ Reply | More ]

so you're arguing that airlines, with a financial incentive to offer the option of holding infants on laps, are doing what is BEST for their customers? that is hilarious. I'm not the original responder, but beyond the safety issue is the issue of space. Don't be a cheap ass. Buy your kid the seat. [ Reply | More ]

If it's completely safe to hold a baby in your arms on a plane, then why the arbitrary cutoff at 2? Why not let parents hold toddlers, or even small preschoolers? Heck, why have anyone buy their own seat if you can sit on someone else's lap the whole way if you're cheap like that? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 07.01.08, 05:22 PM Flag

The issue is - many infants will not sit in a carseat right next to their Mother - they just won't - they will scream and cry because they want their Mommy, and Mommies should be allowed to hold their babies, if need be. [ Reply | More ]
