Anyone send their elentary school aged kids on a school bus that takes 45 minutes or more each way? What's the impact (if any) of the commute on your child? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

DB is scheduled for 7:15 p/u this fall. School starts at 8:20. Not sure what time bus arrives, my guess is around 8. Thinking DH may drive hims to school, seems like too much, especially since DB still naps. So worried about the start of school. [ Reply | More ]

first, stop referring to your soon to be K dc as db. second, he will get a rest time in school. third, why the heck did you opt for a school so far away? [ Reply | More ]

np. Eh. It's not so strange. My dc has a July bday and was still napping the summer before K. And sometimes she'd fall asleep during rest time in K. [ Reply | More ]

This is what we will be doing too, although both of us work, so we don't have a choice. I will be able to drop off and pick up DC at school 2x/month, but that's it. DC will just have to cope. [ Reply | More ]

We're probably looking at an almost 1 hour commute to a citywide G&T next year for our 5 year old. I'm shocked how many others are in the same position. [ Reply | More ]

many have good local options. i think the citywide concept is a bad one for elementary, but that's just me. [ Reply | More ]

Some don't have good local options, so they make a wise decision to send dc to schools outside zone and kids adjust to bus rides. The stupid ones sacrifice the comute for a lousy school. [ Reply | More ]

so quit asking about it here. you made your choice, now deal with making your elementary school kid commute 2+ hours per day, 10 months per year. [ Reply | More ]

oh, and consider moving if the school is that important, and your dc's quality of life matters at all. [ Reply | More ]

i so agree. is it really worth bragging rights to send dc to nest if it means a 2+ hour commute every day? not imo. [ Reply | More ]

DD's starting at Brearley in the fall and we live downtown. I think she will be fine. We will probably move closer to school in a year or two. [ Reply | More ]

Where DT? They've been taking a lot more girls from downtown the past few years. You might be able to find other families to share the commute. [ Reply | More ]

My dd is on the bus for 30 minutes in the morning and an hour in the afternoon (last one picked up, so last one dropped off). Honestly, she hates it and it does have a negative impact. Luckily her school doesn't give homework until 3rd grade and by then we will likely move near school (we are waiting to see what happens with younger child). She loves her school and doesn't want to go to a different school, but she often says she wishes we lived near school. I think it would be better if the longer commute was in the morning and I may see about swiching her to a different bus next year where she would be first on/first off. [ Reply | More ]

we did that for preschool for two years (45-60 minutes one way). For K she'll be on the bus but that's probably also going to be 45 minutes each way. [ Reply | More ]

i would never do this in a million years. a lot of these people going on and on about the commute could have sent dc to a closer district-wide school even if their zoned school sucks, but chose not to. so enough with the whining. [ Reply | More ]

My two cents. I wouldn't, at least in the beginning...although, I understand from one elementary school principal that after the first week or so all the kids want to ride the bus. So, most likely you will have to play it by ear. I, too, have a child who will be five in the late fall and still naps if given the opportunity and/or falls asleep in transit and for that reason alone I would not do it. We turned down a g&t placement which would have required a 45 minute bus ride each way if I took child to school, not to mention the wait for the bus and/or the walk from the bus to school/home. Just too much....but, that said, it just wasnt right for my child. I think only you can make the decision after careful consideration of what is best for your son! Good luck with it!! Our 6 yo takes the bus 45 minutes in the morning, 7:15 pick up. dc LOVES it. It's like this little community before "real"school starts. dc has made friends in other grades and is begging to be allowed to take it home as well- and I KILL myself to get there in the afternoons...Fatigue is not a probem, but bedtime is now earlier than it was in pre-k. This was us, too, but with a 7 am pick up for a 1 hour commute. dd loved the bus friends and the chatty time she had before the quieter classroom time. It got all her talkativeness out of her system so she was ready for school. But, sometimes she just liked to read. She started right away in K and did it for as many years as she was in elementary school. [ Reply | More ]

DC is starting K in Sept and will turn 5 in late fall. Although we LOVED NEST, we felt 45-60 minutes on a school bus 2X's a day would not be good for our DC. WE ranked 2 good district G&T's before NEST on our placement form and got one of them. Also we like to be involved in the schools parent community, and felt it would be difficult to do so living so far away from the school. But everyone makes choices that work best for their own family. [ Reply | More ]
