SN mom here. It is a special ed program set up in many forms - independent/stand alone schools and programs within schools. Tend to take kids with more involved issues, especially physcial issues. What are your child's issues and how old is s/he? Don't know anyone with a child in those programs. [ Reply | More ]

What classification was he given? If mildy austistic ask about the NEST inclusion (not G&T) program. Targeted at aspergers kids. 12 kids in a class 8 NT 4SN. Could DC work well in a CTT class (larger inclusion class)? Are academic skills on target or delayed? [ Reply | More ]

There is no room in the NEST program in Region 9 or 10. The CTT class at the local district school has a wait list. I'm not sure the CTT class would be the right fit for him but I know D75 certainly isn't appropriate. Where am I supposed to send a high functioning autistic child to kindergarten in this city?? There are many CTT classes, you should look into that option. Also what about Parkside - any chance space there. There are also options for self-contained spec ed classes in zoned schools like 12:1:1 and 6:1:1 classes, which, I believe are outside of D75. Another place to try is Herbert G Birch in Washington Heights - publically funded spec ed school. [ Reply | More ]

Apply to SN schools and sue for reimbursement if they're not funded. It's tough - I know. [ Reply | More ]

What schools accept high functioning kids? I thought the Rebecca school was appropriate but I was told today that most of the dc there are more severe. [ Reply | More ]

I'm on the UES. We just moved here in January and have been trying to sort this out for months. It's been crazy. I actually finally called a lawyer last week but still I don't know what I should be doing. Ugh [ Reply | More ]

So glad you have a lawyer. You may want to discuss pendency. It means "stay put". You use it for K when essentially while DOE find placement, but you are limited to only current services, so it sounds like you would just get OT and Speech. Call these schools and see if there are any spots - Aaron school, Parkside, Gateway, Herbert G Birch, Gillen Brewer, West End Day. Also, has your child been evaluated by a a neuropsych - you will need this to apply to any of these schools. Which lawyer are you using? [ Reply | More ]

I didn't know about the neuropsych eval. I assume the DOE doesn't pay for this? I am talking to Regina Skyer (sp?) office and am going in for a consultation this week. [ Reply | More ]

Skyer is one of the top lawyers. You are in good hands. Yes, the neuropsych would be private, DOE should have done testing as well if you did not. When is your appointment with Regina? [ Reply | More ]

Don't sign anything the DOE gives you until you show it to someone in Regina's office. [ Reply | More ]

I haven't signed anything. I was told I would get a letter with his proposed placement and then I was free to tour the school and reject it if I didn't like it. [ Reply | More ]

There is also a Special Needs Board here where you should cross post your question. BTW - where did DC attend preschool. What type of services received currently? [ Reply | More ]

Check out the book, can't remember exact name, something like a Parents Guide to Special Education in NYC - on amazon - written by the woman who founded Gillen Brewer. Lists schools, explains the "turning 5 process". [ Reply | More ]
