Did anyone choose pain medication during labor instead of epidural or natural? If so why how was it and if not why not? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I got the shot of demerol. It just made me loopy, did nothing for the pain, but oddly I remember so little of the time that it didn't matter. DH says I was just wandering the room giggling and I couldn't balance on the birthing ball - he had to hold me on, but I was insistent that I needed to be on the ball. [ Reply | More ]

Laughing really hard, great image! Reading about possible risks to the baby: tired, groggy difficulty breathing etc. but is there possible permanent damage? did your doctor discuss these with you or express concern? [ Reply | More ]

They are most concerned about giving narcotics too close to actual delivery -that's when you can have those side effects. My OB only gives them for early labor. [ Reply | More ]

thank you for responding. I am afraid of the epidural but don't want to have natural [ Reply | More ]

I agree with the poster below - get the epidural. The narcotics really threw me off my rhythm, I think I ended up getting the epi sooner because I was such a mess as the demerol wore off. [ Reply | More ]

I was offered narcotics but opted against them because they effect the baby more than an epidural does and they make me tired. [ Reply | More ]

But they just make the baby groggy and not as alert in the first few mins right? [ Reply | More ]

They can effect their respiratory drive. Not an issue if you have it way before you deliver, but definitely can be if you have it close to delivery. [ Reply | More ]

Getting the epidural is like being licked by a puppy compared to contractions! If you are scared of actually getting it I wouldn't be. If you have spinal issues or something that is entirely different. [ Reply | More ]

Yes. Well, 50 hours in the hospital before I had the c-section. I had mild labor at home for a while before that. But it wasn't anything that required pain medication. [ Reply | More ]
