Horace Mann is a great school academically. Dalton always had inferior college placement to HM and Trinity. Dalton is artsy-fartsy [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Np! Really ask around you will find that its popularity has more to do with new people from outside of NYC hearing that famous actresses went there and mistakenly thinking that means its academically strong. It was always a way station for celebrity dcs, not a great school. It was only trendy nothing more. GL! [ Reply | More ]

I went there and this is a ridiculous statement. First of all, it was always considered a very good school. Just very jewish. Also, calling the education provided there, public school like is about as uninformed as possible. Its a progressive school, always has been, and the education provided there is different than that provided by any board of education. The variety of classes etc. is unbelievable. [ Reply | More ]

IMO dalton has done a very good job of re marketing themselves for the new crowds of people who just arrived. The rest of us know it performs poorly in the realm of academics. Admission to Harvard, as you can tell by the many dcs accepted there from bad publics, does not always mean you have received a great education first. [ Reply | More ]

Entire structure of the school is a joke 'independent learning' which is another term for 'bad teachers and lacking curriculum'. The Dalton Plan was devised for lackluster dcs who had famous parents with a lot of money. Unlike the other schools it took only fame to get in and even fewer brains to get through [ Reply | More ]

np; well, we have no money, not famous in any way, dc got 99 on erb and sb and is headed to D. I wanted D because she can delve into things more and can be self paced. She's the type who just picks up things on her own, so traditional, structured, schools with drills would not have suited her. I think people who think Dalton is a bad school are people who don't believe in progressive education. While it may not be for everyone, it is a great school for kids like mine. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, the nativists, yes. I guess they live in the past. Besides, I think it's foolish to choose one's school based on past reputation or whatever. Don't they care about what's right for their child? BTW, not sour grapes bec dd got into other TT as well and we felt Dalton was better suited for my dd and my family. [ Reply | More ]

>if dd wants to go to HYP, it's fine by me, but I think it's crazy to choose a school based on college exmissions. I mean, how do these people know what their kids want to do and be? What if my dd wants to be a chef and like Bobby Flay, decides not to go to college at all? What if dd wants to be an actress or a nurse or something else that doesn't require a 4 year college education? Why are people thinking about college placement for Kindergarten admission?? Who knows what the future holds? [ Reply | More ]

Yes the natives, the ones who know more than what they read in a Goldman book or overhear at a cocktail party. The ones who know that reputation and standing of these schools hasn't budged in 60 years. Those people. I read one post the other day from a Nyer who said 'I don't pretend to know anything about your home town academics so I suggest you stop claiming yourself as an authority in mine' [ Reply | More ]

Well, I did not read Goldman book or overheard from a cocktail party. I guess I don't move in your circles. I never heard of any private school before, but made up my mind after tours and reading school literature they mailed me. Dalton was the only school Early Steps recommened for me that had most visible diversity and when asked about it, gave good answers. We turned down another so called TT SS and chose Dalton bec we could see dd being happier there. [ Reply | More ]

Good for you. No one is disputing that you made a decision you were comfortable with. What is being disputed is your ignorant dismissal of the real life personal experiences of people who know far better than you do about the real history and reputations of these schools. This is not a contest, and god knows what 'your circles' is meant to imply. You are making this about something far greater than it is. Your limited knowledge versus someone with far greater knowledge. [ Reply | More ]

That's ridiculous. Things do change and evolve. Look at colleges - some colleges are still the same as 30-40 years ago, but others have totally transformed themselves into major national universities and attract a totally different caliber of student today than 30 years ago. Look at Duke. So it's entirely possible that Dalton has changed too and that the "natives" who graduated ages ago don't actually know everything. [ Reply | More ]

As a native NY-er who did NOT go to Dalton, I have to say that I disagree with all the statements about Dalton not being considered a good school. It definitely had a more liberal/progressive/artsy vibe than other top schools, but the kids who went there were always smart. It definitely attracted the kids of parents who were in the arts or advertising as opposed to the WASP bankers and lawyers. [ Reply | More ]
