I think these gas prices are the best thing that could have happened. I rejoice with every cent they go up!! I love reading all these articles on how people are being forced to drive less, and how in the Netherlands gas is $10 a gallon and no one even blinks! Americans are finally being forced to deal with how sickeningly entitled they are. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

oh please. You only care about what fits your lifestyle. WHat do you do in your personal life to "save the planet"? Or are you a greenocrit like Al Gore? [ Reply | More ]

What fits my lifestyle? wth are you talking about? I own a car, and it costs a shitload to fill the tank. LUckily I can see further than my own wallet (unlike some) and see that this is still a good thing for the planet. I do as much as I can in my life to be ecological. Again... unlike some. ok so you have a car. High gas prices are going to effect you but not as much as someone on the egde anyway. Most of us care about being ecological within reasonable boundaries. I get tired of the green high horse that people get on when they think they should do what they want but I should change my whole life. Maybe I was projecting onto you but saying high gas prices are a good thing is idiotic. It will hurt most people in one way or another. Gas provides transportation for most goods in this country. Higher prices means higher prices on everything. That means people buy less stuff and production has to be cut back. That means people lose their jobs. The whole economy could fall because gas prices are going up. There are reasonable things that can be done but this is ridiculous [ Reply | More ]

the whole "let's get away with paying as little as we can for everything, taking the earth's resources as our God-given property to use as flagrantly as we see fit, and excusing the whole thing by saying it's good for the economy." That's been the way of thinking for many decades and it's toxic. As we are forced to use less gas and prices go up on other things, we will be forced to invest in and create alternative and greener energy sources--which will in turn spur the economy AND create jobs. I see. Ok - I think we should use resources in as responsible and environmentally friendly way as possible but I do think the earth is here for our use. I also know that if the environmentalists in this country had not used quite so many scare tactics and oil companies had been able to drill years ago in places that we know there is oil (Coast of Fla and Anwar for ex) prices would not be as high. Also, did you know that there has not been a refinery built in this country since the 1970's? That amazed me! I'm not saying environmentalism is all bad. Obviously it's nec since people and companies will take advantage. But there has to be some balance there. We have to take the state of the earth into account as well as the state of the economy and what the market will bear. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, I agree about off-shore drilling. I think the rationale is more NIMBY than environmentalism. But the fact is, accessing MORE and MORE oil is not a long-term solution either. We need to use. less. oil. [ Reply | More ]

You are forgetting about all the working poor - they have to travel the farthest to get to and from work (because housing is too expensive closer). [ Reply | More ]

No--suburban sprawl has taken over the country because the assumption has always been that hey, we can just drive everywhere! Now the chickens are coming home to roost. In the rest of the world, gas is super expensive and people build comunities, and cars, accordingly. [ Reply | More ]

I totally agree with you - but what are you proposing the solution should be for the average person making $10/hr after driving 1.5 hrs each way each day? They don't have a lot of options as gas prices go up. There is nowhere for them to move to, there are no jobs closer to them. [ Reply | More ]

i am from europe and my grandmother used to bike to work 2 hrs each way. one of my cousins still bikes to work, as it is expensive to own a car (in europe it always been; and the gas was always more expensive there than here). america is built on oil, just look around. [ Reply | More ]

High gas prices are not a tri-state area phenomenon and not every city has good public transportation. Try getting from an apartment in Jamaica Plain, MA (low income) to a job in Bedford, MA (an expensive area) on public transportation. [ Reply | More ]

To be fair, the European countries with high gas prices also tend to have much better public transportation and intercity public transportation. And they tend not to have an infrastructure system based on highways and no sidewalks. [ Reply | More ]

So let's improve our public transportation system rather than continuing to spiral downward with the waste of resources! [ Reply | More ]
