Someone mentioned in an earlier post that LL would be very dd dense for K in the fall. Does anyone have more detailed info relating to this or the incoming K classes in general. TIA. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

why does it matter that a class should have a 50:50 ratio? [ Reply | More ]

because lower scores on olsat do not mean a ds is stupider than a higher-scoring dd. they mature at different rates. to make six years of a ds's education dependent on one test that puts him at a disadvantage sucks. [ Reply | More ]

are you suggesting that boys should have a lower cut-off than girls? By how many points? Has there been research on this? [ Reply | More ]

i'm not saying it's easy to correct the imbalance, but i do think they should consider testing for g&t when dcs are older and i for one don't have a problem with the onsites. ds singletons are otherwise screwed by this process. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with you. G&T should start at a later age. I would love to know why NYC started it in Kindergarten (I know all about middle class retention etc. etc. which is valid nowadays but I doubt this was the case when the G&T programs were established quite a while back). [ Reply | More ]

I doubt they will. I think it has been this way for awhile. [ Reply | More ]

for a while? this incoming k class is only the second class picked without regard to gender balance. my dc is entering 2nd grade in the fall and her class is gender balanced. [ Reply | More ]

i think they will have to go back to gender-balancing given the completely skewed class makeups. [ Reply | More ]

I don't see it as much as I'd like it. If they balance for gender, why not race, income, age, geographic diversity and any other variable they used to consider at onsites? [ Reply | More ]

this isn't a diversity issue. the olsat doesn't discriminate against someone from queens, but it does discriminate against boys. [ Reply | More ]

It also discriminate against kids that did not go to preschool or did not have UMC parents read to them/teach them stuff, which happen to be the vast majority of AA/Hispanic kids. [ Reply | More ]

not so fast! It does discriminate against poor kids who were not able to receive an enriched upbringing. Etc. etc. Balancing for anything is two-sided sword. [ Reply | More ]

this is another reason the olsat shouldn't be used. it discriminates against those from lower income families, sure, but let's not get carried away and say people from queens need a break as well. [ Reply | More ]

Not just OLSAT, Stanford-Binet does too, all standardized tests do at this age. [ Reply | More ]

OLSAT, SB, etc. etc. This is not OLSAT or G&T specific. I think there are issues involved that cannot be solved by a board of education. It has much deeper roots in this society. [ Reply | More ]

Exactly, once you start it's a slippery slope. And for the record I do think the girl-heavy classes suck beans all around. [ Reply | More ]
