ERB or not? Bright, engaging, social, verbal, smart summer b-day DD. Not a fan on SS or uber traditional schools. Average, pasty white, dual WOH family. Currently, private school is a bit of a stretch, but my salary could jump up quite a bit if I switch jobs as my current salary is a bit under market. Our zoned school is HORRIBLE. (PS 145) Live in D3, but if the lottery or G&T process didn't work out, we would HAVE to move. Hate that we wouldn't know if we had to move until June. WWYD? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Bought 5 years ago, but I hear you on how long it takes to sell something lately. [ Reply | More ]

I also WOH at a pretty intense job. A long commute for me is like a death sentence. [ Reply | More ]

I know, but it is sort of a gamble. My DD does puzzles all day by herself. I catch her reading boxes/cartons and writing the words she sees on paper. Memory like an elephant. Bold. Nonetheless, on the day of the test, she could have a bad day. HATE IT! The private process seems to at least be a little less about the test. [ Reply | More ]

she'll do fine, and the private process is more about you as a family. If you tend to show well, it will be reasonably easy. the test is really not as big a deal as people here lead you to believe. [ Reply | More ]

I would have my child take the ERB as soon as possible after turning 4 and research private schools. You might look at schools that have a preK as that gives a school more flexibility in placing a summer birthday. [ Reply | More ]

^^^ I would also not use distasteful adjectives to describe yourself as a family. [ Reply | More ]

Thanks. I hear you. I'm just feeling a little down about how one is not in control of their own destiny in this process. I'd characterize ourselves as hardworking, easy going, low maintenance parents of an exceptional girl. [ Reply | More ]

You should explore all of your options. Agree with above poster that your dd sounds like she could do very well on the OLSAT, but you should definitely explore privates. Also don't forget to try for Hunter. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, you should have her take it. You should look at a wide variety of schools - even those you think you won't like, you might be surprised. [ Reply | More ]

Yes to ERB. your dd might be one of several hundreds of kids who get 99 on olsat and get into 3rd choice school you might not like. Hunter had 300 kids who made 98 cutoff for their 48 seats. TT coed is a bit of a stretch (Trinity is all about connections, so that leaves Dalton and HM) but a strong chance at ECFS, CGPS, Trevor if you FC them with a smart dd like yours. [ Reply | More ]

the thing is, if you move in june, you may not have the pick of the top schools. look what's happening at 234, 89, 41, etc. [ Reply | More ]

OP- I know. That frustrates me. I wouldn't be able to move into a great zoned school and get a seat. [ Reply | More ]

a lot of us feel your pain. we killed ourselves to buy in a great zone, only to have to deal with a lottery. didn't qualify for hunter, qualified but dinged at citywides, could have gone to ll but the commute is just insane, were lucky enough to get into our fc zoned school. it's just crazy. there's no guarantee of anything anymore, even with a 98 olsat dc. right back at ya. is there any way you could rent out the place you own and then rent a place in a good district for a year, starting in, like, october? a total pita, i know, but might give you some options. [ Reply | More ]

That seems insane. That being said, I work in one of the top school districts you list. Would be nice to live so close to work, but we have a nice community where we live....and it is by all of DC's friends and preschool. [ Reply | More ]

then i think you have to be willing to accept the worst case scenario, given how arbitrary olsat test results seem to be. i hope it works out for you. gl! [ Reply | More ]

Funny how privates seem to be some people's safety net for the G&T school process. [ Reply | More ]
