I have a 15 mos old and it is exhausting chasing after her. My other two are 5 and 7, so I can definitely say that once your youngest is 5 you can just be sitting in a chair with a drink in your hand letting them run around, up until that age there is no such thing as fun and relaxation for you [ Reply | More ]

NP: can I just ask about this chasing stuff everyone talks about? I have 7yo twins. When they were 15mo, they toddled around, but I didn't necessarily chase after them the whole time [ Reply | More ]

I think it comes down to family dynamics: Are you in charge, or are the kids. If the kids are in charge, you will end up "chasing" them all over because they don't have to obey certain rules and commands from you like "stop running", "come back over here", "don't do that". It's all in how you choose to raise your children. [ Reply | More ]

oh please, it comes down to your kid's personality. My 15 mos old will attempt things my 5 yo won't [ Reply | More ]

Do you spend the day "chasing"? [ Reply | More ]

at home in our child proofed apartment, no. Anywhere else, pretty much. She was walking by 9 1/2 mos of age and running by 10 mos. She is our 3rd dc and by far the most exhausting....she also puts everything in her mouth so we have to be on top of her at all times-outdoors is especially difficult as she goes after sticks and rocks etc [ Reply | More ]

I had my 15 mos old at Herkscher Playground this weekend. She ran around like a maniac trying to scale brick walls that were at a 45 degree angle because she saw older kids doing it. All she wanted to do was walk up and down these brick walls and would not be redirected. That is where the action was. When we go to our pool club, she doesn't want to play in the toddler pool, she wants to step in and out of the pool (brick sides) over and over and run up and down the sidewalk and climb up any set of stairs she sees. She has never 'toddled' around. I wish she did...if I don't stay within [ Reply | More ]

arms reach of her at all times (or in the above example am not holding on to her) she would break a limb. Today she got the step stool out of the bathroom carried it out herself and used that to climb up onto our play-kitchen counter and was standing on the toy cash register atop the toy kitchen counter [ Reply | More ]

Oh, see my twins were toddlers but not wild toddlers. I guess it's just a difference in kid personality. I could redirect from where I was standing, not having to chase them. [ Reply | More ]

my dd is seriously insane. If there were two of her (as in twins) one would be dead by now. She loves to climb and it is seriously scary for us [ Reply | More ]

so what did you do at a city park where there was a play structure with steps and ladder openings where they could fall 6 feet to the ground? I haven't met a 15 mos old yet who can safely descend a ladder on his own [ Reply | More ]

For starters, they always followed each other, rather than doing the twin split, which is more common I think. For another, they were ok with the openings. I'd just stand at the bottom and tell them to go to the slide and meet me there and they would do that, or insist that I carry them down from the opening one after the other [ Reply | More ]

that would never work for me. She'd try to come down herself through the opening and I'd be trying to catch her as she fell [ Reply | More ]

^or if she did go to the slide, she would then try to walk down it instead of sitting [ Reply | More ]

I think it depends on the kid. My older dc sat quietly and played and never got into trouble. Younger ds is now nearly 3 and I have to chase him all the time -- he is constantly in trouble and I have a feeling this is going to last until he is at least 5. [ Reply | More ]
