an inexpensive 16" bike from Toys r Us. then buy a good one when he/she's 8 or so and rides well [ Reply | More ]

I completely disagree. Get a Specialized Hotrock- it will serve fro a couple of god solid years and is very affordable, durable and comparatively light(esp once training wheels and brackets are off). It's critical to physical development that a child this age- and over the next few years- have a position that is supportive of their skeletal and muscular development. [ Reply | More ]

np: We just bought a hotrock for ds and are very happy with it. It was about $180 with tax, so more than Toys'r Us models, but we figured that at least two kids will use it and we want it to last. If you don't want to spend $180, watch Craigslist. They periodically pop up there for $100 or less. [ Reply | More ]

also- Unless you have a titan of a 4 yr old girl, 16" is too big for her. Go somewhere with really knowledgeable staff. A great person to talk to is Gus at Bicycle Habitat-on Columbus Ave bet 80 &81 St. The specialized Hot Rock is well under $200 and comes in good colors-b&w, Purple&blk. Stay away from those dept. store bikes at this point; you can always turn to those, when riding is developed and she'll growing out of her bike quicker but I never would. [ Reply | More ]

OP: ok, so she's 44" and 45lbs. What size should she have at this point? 12"? My mom has been trying to convince me to get her a trike, but that seems like it wouldn't last long and also would be a letdown for her. But I don't want to set her up for frustration if she can't pedal. We'll be getting the bike out of NYC, btw. Will try for a bike store, but not sure they all will carry this one. [ Reply | More ]

I second the Craiglist route. Find a 16 inch with training wheels. She'll most likely learn to ride a bike somewhere between 5-6 years old. At that pint, you can buy a good bike that will last for some time. As for the trike, I think it's fun for 4 y/o's to ride trikes. It's much more fun than a bike with training wheels - you can go fast, don't need help, etc, etc. So, while on Craigslist pick up a cheap trike, too. [ Reply | More ]

yeah, mom is almost always (and annoyingly) right. I just was thinkging she'd be disappointed with a trike. probably not. Thanks again. [ Reply | More ]
