Feel so awful for the poster whose husband has been having an affair with 21-y-old. Wanted to weigh in as most people seemed to think he'd seriously want to be with the babysitter. My father had an affair with our babysitter, and it wasn't just a one-night stand. She was a live-in babysitter and it went on for 6 months at least, if not more. I was a teenager at the time and HATED him for it. Babysitter was 22 years old. My mom was ready to divorce him and he begged his way back. I refused to speak to him except when absolutely necessary for at least a year. They stayed together but I maintain that things were never the same between them since then. Their marriage is okay at best. He adores my mom but she's still, to this day, a little distant from him. (She used to be lovey-dovey; she was living afterward, but not the same. Ever.) I am curious if you knew about the affair while it was going on? [ Reply | More ]

No, I didn't. But I was there for the massive fight they had when my mom found out.In hindsight, though, I realize I started feeling like the babysitter was acting a little too snooty for me -- she was so much nicer then was just weird -- and wonder if it started then ... [ Reply | More ]

So ultimately do you think your mom did the right thing by staying? Your family was wealthy and she was able to hold on to her lifestyle (which is important, I am not minimizing). [ Reply | More ]

My family was not wealth, more middle class (or I guess upper); she was more of an au pair. I am torn: On one hand, I am proud I have parents who are still together and have worked through things ... on the other, I have to be honest, I know it devastated my mother, and me, and I know their marriage has sometimes been very strained. I think that the DH will come to his senses - the drama/danger/excitement of a young new body in a furtive and scary situation will supercharge any relationship. I hope that the wife can ride this out for a while until everyone comes back to reality. THEN she can decide if she should leave and how much he will pay for the screw up. [ Reply | More ]

Why did your parents have a live-in babysitter if you were already a teenager? Indeed, why have a live-in babysitter at all? Inviting another woman into the household is only asking for trouble. [ Reply | More ]
