My friend with a ds at PS11 says they are starting at 8:50-3:10 next year. Wish that was true for us... we need all the time we can get in the mornings... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

wow, really? we're facing getting our dd to Nest by 8:20, and it's going to be a big adjustment for us all. Will have to leave the house around 7:30 at the latest. [ Reply | More ]

ours too. we can't put him to bed any earlier, and he just is a sleeper. And we're going to have to schlep starting next year, probably leaving the house before he usually wakes up now. bummer. [ Reply | More ]

do you understand that he'll grow up? most 5-6 yos only need 10-11 hours, not 12-13. by the end of the year, he will be waking with the chickens. [ Reply | More ]

That's totally not true. Some people need more sleep than others. Heck, plenty of people function just fine on 6 hours of sleep, and I need 8 and ideally 9 to be in top shape. And I am pushing 40. [ Reply | More ]

That surprises me - it's a much shorter day than our 8:20 - 3:10. but our school uses the extra "enrichment time" that the DOE mandated for all the kids not just some of them. [ Reply | More ]

So schools who don't have the extended day as posted above (6hrs and 50 minutes) are just passing on the extra bucks from the DOE? That seems criminal (or somehow incorrect). [ Reply | More ]

np--Some schools use extended time (either before or after school) only for the kids who need extra help. [ Reply | More ]

This is correct, and PS11 uses it for those kids in need to have focused classes, rather than more gen ed classes. [ Reply | More ]

Which is definitely a wise choice, as not all kids need the extended day by a long shot. Especially in the early grades. [ Reply | More ]

I hear you. These ppl here asking who sis running the family (the parents or the kids) seem to have kids that are spunky in the morning. If you have to deal with a grumpy kid early in the morning you will start hating the morning routine very quickly. And it is not like you can just say "if you don't hurry now you are staying home!". It's not preschool anymore. [ Reply | More ]

I have twins and one has woken up a full hour earlier than the other since the day they were born. Clearly they are each just hardwired differently. Unfortunately the late riser doesn't wake up till 8 am so we are in for a rough Fall! [ Reply | More ]

MY dc is grumpy in the morning. She has to be at school by 8:20. We wake her up at 6:30, carry her to the couch, put on a cartoon and don't even talking to her until 7 pm. Then at 7 we start with breakfast and getting her dressed and then give her more time to chill out on the couch. If we didn't give her the extra chill time in the morning she would be a wreck in the morning at school. So if you have a kid that is grumpy in the morning and hard to wake up, give them more time in the morning instead of less. [ Reply | More ]

no, you actually take them to school. that's the way it's always worked. for us and our parents and their parents. why does this generation have to bend over backwards to make sure little precious is happy and smiley all the time? [ Reply | More ]

What I am saying is that if they are grumpy in the morning, wake them even earlier than what you need. They just need more time to wake up. You don't wake them up and then bring them directly to school like the poster above is suggesting. What an A-hole to say that. [ Reply | More ]

That's absurd. If I wake up my kids in the morning, it's a disaster. Much better to let them wake up naturally. If you toy with the bedtime routine you will find a way. [ Reply | More ]

What if they don't naturally wake up within the time frame needed to get them dressed, fed and off to school? Are you going to let them sleep in and just get a late pass on those days that they didn't wake up in time? [ Reply | More ]

The couple times it happened, it was because we were out late the night before. We just took a cab to school and dc ate cereal bar on the way. Not ideal, but not a big deal two or three times a year. [ Reply | More ]

You see not only do I need DC to be on schedule for himself, I need him to be on schedule for me. I am a working mom and I don't think my manager would understand that I was late that day because I was afraid to wake my precious child up early. I think my child is learning life habits from me regarding the importance of punctuality. [ Reply | More ]
