What is the average cost of a vacation for you? Really want to do something this summer, but feel that it costs so much these days. And we don't really do luxury vacations either. We're at 140K HHI, so that could explain it. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

We own a summer place but we rent it out at $5k a week so for two weeks plus entertainment (I assume you don't count food because you'd be buying it anyway) I'd say about 13-15k [ Reply | More ]

As I said we own our summer place (Nantucket) but our tenants pay $5k a week so what with gas and entertainment and travel costs (ferry tickets) it could be $13-15k [ Reply | More ]

vacations have gotten SO out of hand financially - read the old "love & money" article in the wsj.com - i think it was last summer about a family who asked their kids what they wanted to do and they ended up staying home, going to the park, etc and having a wonderful time for everyone. its not "relaxing" to overspend. We do a nice $6-7K vacation about once every 3 years. Other years, we fly home to visit family, or stay at family member's vacation homes. Try to wait till we have frequent flyer points to fly. $350K NYC multi kid family. [ Reply | More ]

Usually about 4k for a week if we fly for a family of 3. Even with discount fares, and a cheapish place to stay (we tend to rent a condo rather than stay in a hotel), by the time you add rental car, food, etc., it adds up quickly. [ Reply | More ]

We rent a house in Corolla, NC on the Outer Banks with friends. It ends up costing us about $2K for a week in beachfront house with private pool, food and travel included. [ Reply | More ]

Big vacation ($5K or more) every other year or so. Less other years. 175 HHI, not NYC. [ Reply | More ]

We have a sane, sleeps 6 place in Cape May and rent it out for $13-1500. a week for some of the Summer. It's got it all: Gorgeous Historical Victorian town, amazing beaches and nature, loads of seaside family-oriented activities, a killer zoo not far away, some great restaurants and lots of peace and quiet when you want it. We actually have a few weeks available, so check out the link. If you've never been there, Cape May is a great discovery; You'll surely go back. http://www.simonecolina.com/quad/ [ Reply | More ]

The Adirondacks are gorgeous and relatively affordable if you rent a house on a lake. We've gone there in the summer & find stuff on VRBO. As for what we spend, I can't even go there, too much. DH's family lives abroad (he's not from here) so we fly to Australian, etc. at Christmas time, peak season. [ Reply | More ]
