Nursing moms: how did you know your milk was coming in? db has been nursing vigourously for the past 2 days (we are still in the hospital, c-section), but I am pretty sure its still colostrum (breasts do not hurt and are still soft, etc). Its weird though, because she will stay latched on for like an hour and suck...is she getting that much from the colostrum? She seems so hungry....like she can't nurse enough. she's setting up her milk supply. Babies "put their orders in" for BM several days before they need it. So, if DB is nursing long and often, this will stimulate your milk production. Most important thing to watch for is how many wet diapers/BM's DB has. [ Reply | More ]

Ask a nurse for advice about this. If your child nurses that long, she might not be getting enough. Is she making wet diapers and poops? [ Reply | More ]

Not true. As long as DB has enoguh wet diapers, Bm's in a 24 hr. period, and is gaining weight, DB is fine. I hate when people say DB "may not be getting enough" from BF'ing because (they nurse for long periods of time. Speak to a lactation consultant at the hospital or thru your ped's office before listeining to anyone on UB. [ Reply | More ]

You will know for sure. After c-sections it can take longer. Just look for signs of dehydration...suken fontenel, dry lips... [ Reply | More ]

You'll know when it comes it! You'll feel it. And brand-new babies don't eat that much in their first days; the colostrum she's getting is enough (as long as she's dirtying diapers). Congratulations! [ Reply | More ]
