Does anyone know someone who actually was caught lying about address for an out-of-zone school? What happens? I heard that if it happens after the child has started school, they won't make the kid leave. True? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

how can someone get caught? if you show the right documentation when you register, then that's it. you're in. I wonder how people fake con-ed bills. [ Reply | More ]

which schools do this? that would infuriate me that $$ was being wasted like that. do they check on ALL students or just the ones that look different? [ Reply | More ]

wow, someone has anger issues-calm down, nellie. are we hitting a little too close to the bone here? there are people who lie about this-I understand, everyone wants what is best for their dc. but system is what it is and lying about it takes services and resources from others who qualify for them. I grew up in Queens, and we let a family friend use our address to send DD to our zoned HS. People do it all the time, but the DOE will check, and if you get caught, you will be forced to pay for the cost of the tuition (DOE will give you a number - usually in $10 - 15 K range) and you will be forced to return to your own zoned school if the school DC is attending is overcrowded. wait, so a parent comes in with the b/c, the con-ed bill and the health form and registers the child. then the school actually sends someone out to the address on the con-ed bill to make sure the person on the con-ed bill at that address actually lives there? and they do all that before the child is then officially registered? because you can register your kid and then, say, october 1 move -- but your kid is still in the school until graduation. the rules have changed. if you've moved, fine. but if they find evidence that you lied when you registered, you can be kicked out at any time. [ Reply | More ]

money well spent imo. i want my dc to get a good education in a classroom that is not bursting at the seam with cheaters. besides, in some cases the school enlists parent volunteers to do the home checks. [ Reply | More ]

np: checking buzzers seems like unreliable proof. in our building, we don't have names on the intercom list, just apt. numbers. (and no doorman in our building, on LES). [ Reply | More ]

i think that's just a first step to check the buzzer. in some cases they will want to get inside the apartment and make sure the family is actually living there. [ Reply | More ]

This has got to be bullshit. There is no way in the US of A that a school has the right to enter an apartment to determine who is living there. [ Reply | More ]

I went to an informational meeting on public schools once and one mom was all up in arms about out of zone kids getting into schools and asked principals on the panel what they do about it and one principal said, "if they have the proper documentation at registration, then they're in. we can't be and are not in the private investigation business. we have too many other things to do." Then the mom says, "well what if parents did the investigating, and brought proof to you that the child is not in the zone?" and the principal said, "if the child has the correct paperwork at registration, then the child is in. a lot of times families move during the time their child is at our school, but even if they then move out of zone, that child still has the spot at the school." basically, she was saying it's impossible to prove a child does not belong at the school. this isn't about moving out of the zone once you've used actual proof of residency to get into a school. and things have changed a lot since you went to that meeting. [ Reply | More ]

I know a family (out-of-zone--actually out-of-district) who was admonished for not always getting their child to school on time. This was years ago, before the crowding crunch in some schools, but I think it's a good point. If you lie, at least make sure your child gats to school on time. [ Reply | More ]

no, that's not true anymore. when you register you have to sign something that says the address you provided is accurate and that you understand that if it's not and the doe finds out dc can be kicked out at any time. [ Reply | More ]

BUT, you CAN MOVE after your child is in first grade and STAY in the school legally. [ Reply | More ]

that's correct. but the address you provide when you register must be accurate at the time you register whether you subsequently move or not. [ Reply | More ]

it doesn't really take columbo to figure it out. i'm not saying they are going to go after every family, i'm just saying that if someone rats them out and they are able to verify they never lived there, they can kick them out. [ Reply | More ]

who is going to spend the time on this? I think a lot of people ASSume that a family must be in a school because of a lie when in fact perhaps that family got in the school years ago when it wasn't crowded, and once the oldest kid was in, then siblings are allowed to register. [ Reply | More ]

no, a lot of us know for a fact who the cheaters are. you seem pretty defensive, btw. like you dodged a bullet and are now telling people your oldest got in under some old policy. [ Reply | More ]

I've registered at three different schools in the last 4 years and not once have I been asked to sign anything like this. which schools require this? it's a totally empty threat because the burden of proof that the family lied is on the doe -- which last i heard does not have an investigative arm. i think it's new this year. and it's not an empty threat. people have been kicked out of schools for this. and there are plenty of people happy to turn them in, so not so hard for the doe to ferret them out. [ Reply | More ]

If a question arises about a student's address, or there is a suspicion of a falsified address used to register the student, the school is required to initiate an address verification investigation within 30 days of discovery of the problem. [ Reply | More ]

I know a few people this happened to in Nassau County. They were charged "tuition" retroactively for all the years they were wrongly in the district. They tried to fight it, but had no grounds. [ Reply | More ]
