My just barely 2 y.o. has begun to stutter. We have spoken to speech therapists who have told us to wait as normal disfluencies are to be expected. As I see her struggling to say words she has previously not had any problems with, I am a bit nervous. Anyone experience this with their child? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

No, but I used to work with a woman who stuttered and she told me the first day I started working there about her condition and asked me not to interrupt or finish her sentence when she got stuck. It was hard at first, but after a while it seemed almost normal [ Reply | More ]

this is so nomral. My dd started stuttering at 3yr old. It was bad but lasted about a month. I spokeo to a speech therapist I know and they told me it's very normal. It's when they dc is going through a verbal growth spurt. The brain and mouth are out of sync. [ Reply | More ]

Were the stuttterings in almost every sentence? Did they go for several seconds such as ddddddddddaddy and cause a variance in your childs intonation? Did your child demonstrate frustration and refrain from speech at all? [ Reply | More ]

Yes--Google toddler stuttering. It's a normal part of development--ot something to be concerned about at all. [ Reply | More ]

Toddle stuttering is completely normal - don't worry about it now and really don't do anything - just let them finish. It often goes away as quickly as it came on. [ Reply | More ]

I agree with above responders. Have an adult friend who stutters. I asked him once when it started. He said he was around 7 or 8 -when his parents were getting divorced. Do some research on the onset of stuttering...it may be rare that it starts as a toddler- and that toddlers that stutter outgrow it...don't know for sure but it may put your mind at ease. Yes. DD#1 always went through a period of stuttering just before a big language burst. It lasted about six weeks. I was patient, but when she would get really stuck I would smile at her and suggest she take a big breath before trying again. [ Reply | More ]
