Has anyone here had an au pair? Is it possible to request someone from a specific country? We would like the children to have an Italian au pair because I have family in Italy - they could learn the language and also I think get a good cultural experience that would prepare them for summers in Italy later. I think someone on UB has a very sullen Italian au pair she is trying to boot - maybe you can get her. [ Reply | More ]

Oh really? The agency I am looking at says you can trade if the au pair doesn't work out. (But I guess I have to realize that the girl could end up not really being a great cultural experience at all for the kids, maybe I'm kidding myself.) [ Reply | More ]

Yes you can trade but wouldn't that feel akward to do that to someone living in your home/involved with your kids? [ Reply | More ]

Less awkward than wishing her dead while she parties all night and is terrible to your kids. [ Reply | More ]

yes, their profile says what country they are from. I'd call a couple of agencies. We used aupair care and ours is due to arrive in Aug. from brazil. When I was looking, there was nobody from italy...I think they may 'recruit' from certain countries certain times of year. They charge about $250 to be able to view the profiles of the candidates but sometimes they have 'sales' where you pay only $25 or free to start searching. [ Reply | More ]

I wonder if it's difficult to get anyone from western Europe these days. GL with yours! Have you been happy with your agency? [ Reply | More ]

yes, so far...but since mine hasn't arrived, I don't have any personal experience to share regarding having an aupair live with you. I would definitely go with an agency that lets you view resumes without paying $$ up front. With aupair care, they come to interview you at your home and make you submit 2 references before you can view the aupair bios. I'd have been pretty annoyed if I had wanted someone from a particular country ...at the time I was looking, they were mostly from Brazil (and a few other south american countries), Thailand, Germany and France. I was kind of surprised more countries were not represented. [ Reply | More ]

I've been happy so far...I was kind of surprised more countries weren't represented...I'd have been annoyed for example if I wanted someone from Italy....when I was looking it was mostly women from Thailand, Brazil, Germany and France (and a few other South American countries besides Brazil)...but 99% of them were from one of these 4 places. At aupair care, they make you apply, send in 2 letters of reference and come to your home to interview you (I'm sure this is to make sure you are legitimately looking for an aupair etc, and you aren't some creepy sex offender) - but you have to go thru all this before you can even view the resumes of the available aupairs [ Reply | More ]

Have you been happy with the experience? Am I insane to think she could be helping me teach the kids a language by doing immersion in the house (I have very rudimentary Italian)? What's it like having another person in the house like that? [ Reply | More ]

I have been sooo lucky and had 2 fabulous au pairs. The first was from Colombia and this one is from Nepal. They are completley different but I have loved them both. I cant really imagine the immersion thing in my house but maybe your kids would be open to it. how old are they? [ Reply | More ]
