Our nanny of three years recently decided that since I was eight months pregnant it would be a fabulous time to take a five week vacation back to the Philippines. I had to get a replacement to take care of ds while I was working. The new nanny has worked out famously--my sons loves her and so do we. She has also expressed a desire to stay on permanently. If and when our previous nanny returns how much severance is she entitled to? Is this affected if we can help her find a new job? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Our agreement with our nanny would not allow for her to take 5 straight weeks of vacation (excluding an emergency, obviously) - so I'd consider this the nanny leaving the job. [ Reply | More ]

Her son was getting married so I understand the need to return and I realize the length of the trip but five weeks... [ Reply | More ]

I think the length of time is ridiculous. Did she at least give you a lot of notice? [ Reply | More ]

Okay, so it wasn't like she just disappeared. I agree with poster below, if you agreed to it, then you owe her severance. [ Reply | More ]

np. If you agreed to the trip you really can't hold it against her for going. If you want to hire the new nanny then you should still pay your old nanny whatever severance was agreed when you took her on. GL [ Reply | More ]

I'd give her 3-4 weeks severance. I'd also, if possible, see if I could get a message to her and tell her that you've hired someone else, that you'll be happy to help her find another position, that you will give her X amt of severance. If you can't get in touch with her, have her severance ready to go the day she is scheduled to come back and tell her when she reports back to work. [ Reply | More ]

I totally had the same situation happen to me! I think our nanny did it because she wanted to be let go...didn't want to watch 2 kids. Our temporary nanny didn't end up staying on but we found someone else and gave her two weeks. We didn't really agree on any severance when she was hired... [ Reply | More ]

And if she "chose" to take five weeks off right after you gave birth, you'd be bitching about that. [ Reply | More ]
