Legacy and sibling policies are "affirmative action" for the rich and connected. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Maybe legacy is, but sibling policies affect the non-rich too. It's so parents have ONE drop off--not expected to be in two places at once. [ Reply | More ]

it's a much better policy, it's unfair to families to be running all over the place. you don't have to do that in the burbs so why do it in the city where there is more stress/traffic/etc [ Reply | More ]

I'm so tired of parents complaining about how unfair the sibling policy--EVERY parent is at a disadvantage the first go around with the first child. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, but schools are concerned about donations, and the way to encourage that is to foster strong alumni connections by accepting legacies. It's not fair, and yes it hurts the average person, but it's an unpleasant fact of life. Part of what makes these schools so wonderful is their breadth of resources, and they have to offer something in exchange for that. [ Reply | More ]

np; it's because the city has more families with only 1 dc (can't afford to have more dc's). So, it does affect families with lower income. In Manhattan (except for the ghettos), having more dc's is a sign of wealth. [ Reply | More ]

I grant you that legacies tend to be richer (although the only legacy in my dc's grade is a child of color), but all kinds of kids have siblings. Even the legacy situation is changing, as schools open up more. [ Reply | More ]

np: Well, historically they have not been. They had been one of the many ways people of color were kept out. [ Reply | More ]

This statement isn't even correct. In general, a small % of the population is wealthy. Since, there is less people of color in this country of course there will be less wealthy people of color than whites. However, historically, this country has always had wealthy people of color. [ Reply | More ]

I get what you are saying about wealth. But I meant more that legacies have usually been rich AND white, regardless of academic performance. It allowed for few new families to be included, including people of color. [ Reply | More ]

The net effect of legacy policies is to include more rich white people and fewer less rich people of any color. This is obvious. [ Reply | More ]

and honestly, how many of us feel that affirmative action for rich minorities should be that big of a priority. I'm not going to be advocating that Obama's kids get in somewhere without the requisite test scores just because of their race. [ Reply | More ]

np; I sure hope Obama will end affirmative action based on color alone. Mix with income/class, and I'm okay with it. There are SO many rich AA kids and who have all kinds of benefits that it'd be plain wrong to give them even more advantages. Save the affi action for the poor, minority kids instead. I'm so tired of people saying the minorities have equal advantages and equal distribution of wealth as the whites. NOT true. What planet are you from? [ Reply | More ]
