Have had an au pair for 6 months now. IN our "history" with nannies / au pairs we have never had a bad relationship ever. One was here for 2 years, one for 5 years, and now this one. She is lazy, makes no bones about the fact that she'd cannot wait to go home, she is minorly engaging with the dc, and she is moody as can be. I finally had enough last night with an issue and wrote the agency to ask them to get me a new au pair. I feel sad and relieved, but I also sort of feel like "Ha ! You can't behave this way to my family anymore !" Sorry... had to vent. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

no i totally understand. I had a 17yo cousin stay with me for an entire summer, thought she would be a bit of a help to me with my 2 kids. she was awful, moody, depressed, wouldn't lift a finger to help even when I was struggling. Was so happy to put her back on a plane. [ Reply | More ]

I think you did the right thing. She sounds like a waste of space. Hope you have more luck next time. [ Reply | More ]

Honestly, she really is a waste of space. That is a very simple way to describe how I feel. I like the au pair system because I like to feel a "connection" with the young women and learn from them and have them enjoy learning and being a part of our family. She is just thick headed and officially done. [ Reply | More ]

Good for you! It's really hit or miss with au pairs, several of my friends had to "return" theirs (but had wonderful experiences with others, in fact one ended up coming back to the US for college and my friend sponsored her, etc.) [ Reply | More ]

OP. Thank you all. I just got back from breackfast with our favorite au pair (now married and living here) and she said to go ahead and rematch. She called us to say she missed the boys and could we get together. The current au pair is just NOT involved and I no longer feel the need to take care of her and try to make her happy. For some reason I felt like I had to make it work... she's just not the right girl for this. [ Reply | More ]
