is there a way to find out how many classes are in a public school? eg, insideschools.org says a particular school has 18 kids per K class but how do i know how many K classes there are in the school? also, how do i know how many students and/or classes are added per year? tia [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

i think you can safely assume that there are more dcs per class than insideschools reports unless there's a small class size grant. those stats are old. think 25 vs. 20 for k. [ Reply | More ]

i think the doe school reports might have more reliable stats than insideschools. but again, these change, particularly at the most popular schools. [ Reply | More ]

Ask a parent at the school. Go to website and see if they list staff, get your hands on a yearbook. [ Reply | More ]

Test scores show the total number of children in a grade (3rd-5th) who test in a particular year. I was astonished at the overall grade size of some schools (PS 87, for example seems to be one of the largest elementary schools in Manhattan). [ Reply | More ]

^^^ I think most popular schools (at least in Manhattan) have more kids in the lower grades. [ Reply | More ]

i really find insideschools.org to be, well, very superficial. I am a ateacher, and I actually know something about curriculum etc and certainly about my school. I read what they say about my school, then other schools i'm familiar with, and it's all very, how should i put this? superficial, manufactured, etc. Put it this way, they won't pan a 'good' public or write something negative they've witnessed on what they 'know" to be a good public. I just read them as an item of curiousity, and they are valuable for the star rating/quick view on the students test scores ie 1 to 5 stars. That's valuable / quick view info. [ Reply | More ]

i don't want to 'pan' the only independent voice guiding parents on nyc publics, so i applaud their service which is much more than just describing individual schools. and it is a good starting point, even for that. or [ Reply | More ]
