The problem is also how "slow" is defined. Is it developmental, special needs, behavioral? Most kids who end up being put into side programs are lumped together and thus few receive the attention they need. So really, moving slow kids out of the regular classroom just means getting them out of the way so the rest of the kids (really their parents) dont have to deal with them. Which teaches your kids a lesson. Is that one you want them learning? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

yeah - kind of. People who have issues that disrupt other people need to be in another place. You can't have one kid holding up the whole class no matter what the issue is. Competition is a good thing and a healthy motivator [ Reply | More ]

But you can develop a situation where the kids support each other in learning. Any teacher will tell you that you learn best when you're teaching others. the problem arises when kids are labeled and placed out. of course there are kids who will do better in situations with fewer people and specialized attention. but it's generally best for them to be eventually placed back with the others. That is true. I taught a collaborative special ed class for several years and many of the special ed kids were there for violence, but not all. The dc in there for violence were often smarter than the general population, but we also had dc with severe disabilities. It was not easy. [ Reply | More ]
