Make fun all you want, but the Anderson parents raised almost $500,000 last year. How much did your school raise? ( This is in response to the I hate the wall color post- I cannot reply directly to it for some reason.) [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

PS 87 makes a ton of money of the Greenflea flea market. It's a great source of revenue, but other schools do not have that sort of "easy money". [ Reply | More ]

yeah but it's public school (j/k). Is that the kind of answer you are looking for? This post is ridiculous. WHO CARES what publics raise. There will always be complaints from families. Money can't buy happiness [ Reply | More ]

no, but it buys xerox machines and typing paper and art supplies, etc. it's not a ridiculous post at all, considering the sorry shape the nyc public schools are in. [ Reply | More ]

Yep. And it's insane that 50% of the gloating/navel gazing posts are by Anderson parents, while the other 50% are pretty equally divided among dozens of other g&t, private, and public schools. Anderson rules and we all drool. We get it, we get it. [ Reply | More ]

eh. i thought i would do anything to get my dc into anderson. then i started hanging out here and seeing how crazy the parents are. all those rabid divergent thinker posts. i think the mean comments about donna were sort of the last straw for me. the sense of entitlement is mind-boggling. no way i'd want to spend 9 years in that toxic environment where the parents all seem to hate each other, each other's dcs (who apparently don't deserve to be there) and the admin. yuck. Because I think it's a bad idea that parents are allowed to contribute directly to their own dc's school the way they do here in NYC. In other places where I've taught it's not allowed. It intensifies the disparities between the haves and have-nots, and it's unfair in what is supposed to be a public system to serve ALL dc equally. [ Reply | More ]

I think all private schools should tithe over 10% of their fundraising to the poorest schools in NYC every year. Now THAT would be a sh**load of money! [ Reply | More ]

Re the idea of pta money going to an all school pool - I think all the kids should wear the same clothes and bring the same food from home because everything should be equal. Given that there are a limited number of good teachers, I think no school should be allowed to have more than 4 good teachers. If the principal of the school is good, the asst principal should be bad. Parents should not be allowed to read at home to their children since other parents do not have the time or the cultural capital to do so, and as a result, their children fall farther behind. Everything should be equal. [ Reply | More ]

np: You mock, but it's horrible that some children get a better public education in NYC because their parents have money. It's PUBLIC, it is supposed to be equal. Doesn't meant it should be equal but shitty - you've just bought the lies of the DOE. [ Reply | More ]

Why does being "public school" mean every school should be equal? I really don't understand that. [ Reply | More ]

Talk about ridiculous logic. The DOE can't control what happens in children's homes, nor should they. They can and should control what happens in their schools. No one is claiming that all inequities can be erased; dc from affluent families will always have an advantage thanks to their home lives. But the PUBLIC school system should not be exacerbating the situation by providing such unequal services to dc in different schools. [ Reply | More ]

You do realize that not all of that money comes out of the pockets of parents there, right? A lot of it comes from leveraging the private sector and people who come in from outside the parent body to spend $ on stuff and make donations. [ Reply | More ]

Less affluent schools get TONS of Federal and local govt funding to compensate through Title I and other sources. Even at a minimum (say a school with only 20% poverty) they'd get an extra $300-400,000. [ Reply | More ]
