Anyone in D2? What level books (a,b,c,d etc) are children expected to be reading at the end of K and the end of first. Does anyone know? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

that is fine and well-my dc read in k too as many do, but it isn't formally taught in most publics or private until 1st. [ Reply | More ]

that is true of most privates but NOT most publics. Reading is taught in K in our public. [ Reply | More ]

I think this is correct. My understanding is that they work on phonics in K, but there's no expectation that kids will be reading before the end of K. [ Reply | More ]

np: Mine did last year. They did not teach reading. They taught phonics and did a lot of reading together (teacher read from big book while each child had a small book to follow along). [ Reply | More ]

No. I just repeated what was told to me at Anderson orientation yesterday. I don't know what other public Ks are doing, but I assumed they were all pretty much the same on this, but I could be wrong about that. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson has children leaving K not reading. I"m surprised. Nest requires it. 116 pretty much (unofficially) does too - g&t [ Reply | More ]

My child is leaving K this year at NEST and I guess, sort of reading. All the kids are at different levels. Teacher told me not to worry about it. Its only kindergarten. More important to learn social skills. [ Reply | More ]

I hope people see this reply. With all the G&T anxiety, I think many incoming K parents have lost sight of how important the social/non-academic aspects of K are, even if DC have been in all day preschool or day care prior to K. [ Reply | More ]

OP here, so no one in D2 has an answer? Our K children left on F-I for the most part. A couple of lower letters and one great reader who was further along. Are we the only D2 school that does this? [ Reply | More ]

Wow, F-I, is this G&T? Just posted about my DC who's reading at level D and teachers were pleased, as were we. Still pleased since DC wasn't reading at all in the fall, but impressed with those high levels. [ Reply | More ]

My DC just finished gen'l ed K in D2 reading at level D. Teachers told me this was above grade-level for K, but I know that there were other DC in class reading more advanced books. Don't know what's expected for 1st. [ Reply | More ]

My dd just finished gen ed d2 k reading level m-n-o books. I think she was way ahead, but I couldn't tell. It seemed all the kdis were reading. Some who weren't reading at all a few months ago were reading really well in the last week. It was formally taught. [ Reply | More ]

A first grade kid I tutored just barely got to F and they said if she didn't get to F she was going to be held back. That said, I would think anything G and above for a 1st grader would be passable. [ Reply | More ]
