Was just reading a post about PS9 admits being upset about not getting into Anderson. Aside from the whole going to 8th grade and avoiding middle school - and having two classes - I honestly see no difference between the two. Both peers groups will be all 99s. I would imagine if the curriculum were not enough for the class, the PS9 teachers would have to accommodate. What else could possibly be "all that" aside from bragging rights? Same building, same peer group. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

A has accelerated curriculum and PS9G&T doesn't accelerate. That is the BIG diff. But otherwise, they share extras. [ Reply | More ]

Right but my point is - it's basically the same peer group. If PS9 feels the kids need a more accelerated curriculum, can't they accommodate that? Either groups of kids could have been place in the other school if the lottery had been different. [ Reply | More ]

Only people in D3 can apply to PS9. Anderson has kids from many different Districts around the city. [ Reply | More ]

Some could see that as a positive or negative though - doesn't truly differentiate the school [ Reply | More ]

I would see that as a negative personally. like the idea of meeting kids from all over, but frankly, having a neighborhood community seems more valuable. [ Reply | More ]

At this age - I would argue that the neighborhood community is more valuable. High school - when they can travel alone, then it's great for them to explore the city, see different neighborhoods where their friends live. Now -it's nice to run into your friends on the street on the weekends etc. [ Reply | More ]

I agree. I actually worry about the citywide aspect of anderson. [ Reply | More ]

One could argue PS9 G&T has even better peer group (as long as sibs are very few) - at least last year it was when A had onsite for 97+ cutoff. Anyway, PS9 principal is kinda anti-G&T. [ Reply | More ]

Yep, she is, which is a problem as the school really could use differentiated curriculum. The reading/writing program is strong, but math is definitely not. [ Reply | More ]

Even when DOE announced they might allow acceleration for district G&T, Brady dind't want to change anything. [ Reply | More ]

Brady is not anti G&T. She is a terrific principal, and has been supportive of the G&T and gen ed programs, working to create a real community. Not all kids need an accelerated math curriculum, nor do all parents want it. I would like to see some supplementation, and though my very smart dc could handle acceleration, she would be fine without it. [ Reply | More ]

So maybe, if the parents see their kids need some sort of supplementation - they can work for it? How does that even work? New to public schools [ Reply | More ]

I would like that, but really don't feel strongly about math acceleration. [ Reply | More ]

Parents supplement outside of school, either at home or with classes elsewhere. No supplementation is done at PS9 (unlike Anderson). Not all kids need it by a long shot, but a few really do need it, and a lot more could handle it. [ Reply | More ]

Isn't math the only subject that is accelerated anyway? [ Reply | More ]

I don't think there is a huge difference. From what I hear, PS9 G&T is one of the best district programs in the city. I guess it's just the disappointment of not getting A, plain & simple. [ Reply | More ]

Math is definitely better at Anderson. Math at PS9 sucks, and the kids good at math are not challenged at all. [ Reply | More ]

math is accelerated at anderson, but is otherwise basically the same. so the kids get it a year earlier. makes no difference in the long run. In the short run, it allows smart kids to move along at a quicker pace, but math is math, and both use Everyday math. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson supplements the EM curriculum. PS9 does not, and not for lack of trying by PS9 parents. [ Reply | More ]

Not sure how public schools work - but can the parents work to change this? Worst case - can you sign your kid up for math classes or something to help challenge them more if they like it? [ Reply | More ]

Maybe I am just trying to make myself feel better, but I do believe there is a lot to be said to switching schools and being with a different group of kids for those tween years... [ Reply | More ]

I think it depends, MS can be very sucky time for a lot of kids and the admission process is extremely competitive and getting worse. Getting into Delta will be much harder 4-5 years from now, assuming no major crisis happens that would make people leave the city again. And if you are at A, you can choose to apply to privates or Delta if you want change, but are not forced to if you are happy. [ Reply | More ]
