My niece is going to Dalton. Can my db qualify as somehow connected? Or none at all? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

its a family member, but there's no guarantee or way to "qualify" [ Reply | More ]

So, this is not legacy? Is there a place on the application where I can write this "family" going there? [ Reply | More ]

yes, there is a place to write family connections. Legacy means your parent or grandparent went there [ Reply | More ]

Thank you. Need to use whatever we got. I'm sure high ERB counts the most, but. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, for Dalton the playdate, interview and parent meeting are as important, if not more, than ERB. [ Reply | More ]

Right. They are all important but I don't think they take you seriously if your ERB is 90, you know? [ Reply | More ]

They are looking for a certain kind of child and from what I gathered from DC's interview last year during the 1 hour child playdate they do they their own version of developmental testing (DC mentioned interesting things they asked him to do), so if all else falls into place and DC does great on their internal tests and school report - mid 90s ERB probably in the running. Really good Dalton specific essay probably also helps to catch Babby's eye. [ Reply | More ]

Really? I didn't know they do their own eval. I mean, other than draw a person, reading (if dc can), and other usual stuff other schools also "test" for... [ Reply | More ]

Yes, pointed questions for DC - some performance (writing), some thinking. Maybe they all do this - DC just mentioned specifically what she was asked to do on this interview. Actually don't think reading was something she was asked to do at Dalton or she didn't remember it. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, niece mentioned reading (to sis). I know Trinity also asks kids to read. Didn't know about other parts (writing and thinking). Heard niece was also given a puzzle or something. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Yes, DS mentioned Trinity interview which was short for us was reading (maybe some comprehension questions) and drawing. That's it. [ Reply | More ]

Trinity is mostly about connection. Kids who get 99 and read advanced books don't get in. [ Reply | More ]

They almost all give their own IQ tests and have psychologists there to write up their findings [ Reply | More ]

Some schools have really BIG groups, so I don't think internal IQ eval is as thorough (though behavior-wise, they might get more info??)... Dalton playdate is 2 girls, 2 boys. On the smallish side, though not as small as some schools that do one on one (those probably can't eval behavior in social setting at all)... [ Reply | More ]

Dalton goes to many preschools to observe applicants. How can they do their own evaluation with pointed questions, if they are observing child in classroom setting? [ Reply | More ]

Oh, they don't visit every single prek. Playdate was at Dalton. [ Reply | More ]

Good question - they must really rely on PSD input/school report and ERBs in that situation. [ Reply | More ]

I thought every child had to come to Dalton for the playdate, no? [ Reply | More ]

If you go in a preschool classroom for 30-45 mins you can probably tell who is really doing challenging or creative stuff and who is just pushing the trucks/dolls around and passing the time. The standout kids standout if you watch for longer than a few mins. [ Reply | More ]

And they ding "stand-out" kids, too. My dc was fluently reading and was accepted to multiple tts. Dinged (not wl) at Dalton with 99x3 erb. [ Reply | More ]
