Why are Maplewood taxes so high? It seems like you pay double of that for Millburn or Chatham for a similar house. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I'm a Realtor in a high tax town. One of my clients says the high taxes "keeps the dreck out" [ Reply | More ]

That's really not true in Maplewood. It's just the privilege of supporting Newark. [ Reply | More ]

Everyone in Essex County has that privilege, including Millburn/Short Hills and Livingston. What Maplewood does not have is a mall or substantial commercial ratables which pay the high taxes that good local schools require. On the one hand, no having that (large scale) stuff contributes to the unique physical charm of the place; on the other hand, the taxes are higher. Personally, living in Maplewood, I'd give up some charm for some big ratables on the edge of town, if there were room. (Apparently, there isn't.) [ Reply | More ]

for the record Chatham is in Morris County Millburn is not..also in Essex I think...Chatham has lower taxes than Maplewood but a much higher percentage of upper class folks living there..i.e. Maplewood has high diversity and lower school ratings [ Reply | More ]

School ratings do not disaggregate by socioeconomic status and race, therefore, a white upper middle class community like Chatham will virtually always have higher school ratings than a diverse community like Maplewood: if you disaggregate there, the tests scores are comparable or better.
