Tell me we're doing the right thing. Just moved to new house, in a lake community. Have the opportunity to buy a boat and slip, at a big discount. It wouldn't tap us out, but it would delay buying some new furniture and leave us with less of a buffer. We were going to do it, but now are thinking it would be smarter to wait a year or two, even if we end up paying more money then. Now I'm wondering: In 20 years, I'm not going to remember the new sofa in DH's office, but would absolutely remember DC's first summer on our boat, all the fun times, etc. WWYD? Am I reading this right? DC's first summer on our boat, does that mean the kid's one? or just the first summer you have boat... If dc's one, you're not going to have much fun w/ him on the boat anyway... [ Reply | More ]

oh, at 3 and 7 I would but the boat over furniture. The furniture is going to get trashed by dcs anyway... [ Reply | More ]

You have to know how much it costs to maintain the boat, aka, storage over the winter, gas ($5 a gallon and it goes less far in a boat), other stuff. Insurance. Can you swing it? [ Reply | More ]

Yeah, we can. It will mean giving up a summer vacation (but hell, we live on a lake with a boat!) and no more new furniture this year. I do worry about the unexpected - like the engine dies or something. Which from what I've heard, happens. [ Reply | More ]

have you thought of a sail boat instead? We had a pretty small one, and it was wonderful on the lake, and a great educational experience for dc... [ Reply | More ]

It's absolutely what we want for the future. But since it's a 19ft/no cabin limit for the lake, I think the little one (3) is just too young. The slip is coming with a power boat - we're hoping to sell it in a few years and get a sailboat instead. [ Reply | More ]

although, now that I think about it, if gas goes up really high, the resale value may go down, like SUVs now... [ Reply | More ]

I'm sure that's why we are getting such a good price on the boat now. We figured in a few years we'd be lucky to get 1/4 of what we are paying now. Sigh. Getting a slip without a boat attached is so hard - people use the slip as a way to dump their boat, you know? [ Reply | More ]

Boat. Here's the problem: boat slips can be impossible to find when you want them. Do it now! Everyone is assuming boat is power... I grew up sailing and while it was not as "cool" in high school -- as an adult I can see, it was a much more fun/family friendly hobby. [ Reply | More ]

The boat is a power boat. We are hoping by the time the kids are older we can trade up to sailboat (they are simply too young for a small sailboat - 19ft limit on the lake). But I really think the whole experience will be great for the kids, glad it was for you too. [ Reply | More ]

The community has a sailing club for kids starting at age 10. So I hope by then, older DC will take to sailing and we can get sailboat (the younger one will be 6, should be old enough). [ Reply | More ]

Ack! The things we used to do that I can't imagine letting my DC do. But this is one of the reasons we left the city to come here - I need to effing relax and let the kids be kids. [ Reply | More ]

Do it, but factor in the price of gas. It costs a fortune to run a powerboat these days. [ Reply | More ]
