my 3.10 yr old is in a half day summer camp. The group will go on a trip but I don't feel comfortable sending dc to such a large open place like central park. I feel bad but hoping dc won't know when I keep dc home from camp that day [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

How many counselors/adults to kids? I think you're being a bit overprotective. [ Reply | More ]

op: 4 counselors for like 18 kids. I know I'm being overprotective but dc is 3yr old. I think if the place was like the children's art museum I wouldn't mind but such an open place like CP zoo or the open area for running has be a bit nervous [ Reply | More ]

DC is nearly 4 and knows better than to run away. Especially if you warn him about that. [ Reply | More ]

UM, 3 and 4 yos don't always practice good judgment or do what they know they are supposed to. Just FYI. [ Reply | More ]

I am with you. I am nervous about sending 4.5 yo on trips w.o me and I would never send her at 3 yo. Just do something else fun that day. I am sure she will not care. My DD skipped a trip with her preK class (her choice) and she was perfectly content with her decision. [ Reply | More ]

I think the camp knows how to handle groups of kids in public. You're being overprotective. [ Reply | More ]

op: yes I know I'm being overprotective but this is how I feel. I will not do something I'm not comfortable with. I guess growing up in the city and being the dd of a cop has me very cautious [ Reply | More ]

I think you need to let go. You send the child to summer camp and put your trust in the people, not the physical surroundings. Anything could happen anywhere - but you need to let your child go have fun. [ Reply | More ]

op: dc is having fun. Like I said I feel uncomfortable with such an open space like CP. DC has gone on smaller trips but not to such an open place [ Reply | More ]

If they're nearly 4 he's going to know he missed something super fun when the kids talk about it. Maybe ask if they need an extra pair of hands for the trip and tag along as a chaperone. [ Reply | More ]

are you the neurotic mom who asked crazy questions at the Westside Y camp orientation? [ Reply | More ]

op: no I don't live uptown but would hardly call myself neurotic. My older dc has been going on playdates and trips with the class since 4.5yr old. I know my kids and I don't feel comfortable with this trip. Like I said, maybe growing up in the city and having a cop for a day has me very hesitant. So be it [ Reply | More ]

If you don't feel comfortable, just have dc skip it. Of course, 99% chance that dc will be fine, but it's not like it will be a critical educational experience for dd either. [ Reply | More ]

What if you volunteered to be an extra chaperone on the trip? Then you'd be comfortable, you could see how the counselors are for the next time and dc wouldn't have to miss the trip. [ Reply | More ]
