depends if you mean 11 G&T or not. I'd do 11 G&T over 41, but 41 over 11 gen ed [ Reply | More ]

PS 11 G&T. But why are you asking now? I thought G&T acceptance was due last week. This year, there are so many high scores DCs in 11. Academically, it will be strong. Also small class size and music/art program is wonderful. [ Reply | More ]

is it too late for you to register at 11? I would personally go for the G&T at 11. Going to be a very strong set of kids, two small classes, and the school is great. current parent. [ Reply | More ]

smaller class size, smaller school, more diversity in the school (although the G&T may not be as diverse as in years past)...swimming pool, more laid back/down to earth parent body, and I think 11 has better teachers overall than 41 [ Reply | More ]

I guess I should have prefaced my response with the fact that dc goes to 11 G&T - finishing 2nd grade and I've never heard any complaints about the teachers. I chose it for the reasons I mentioned - we were all set to move into the 41 zone 3 years ago....so glad we didn't. Meanwhile I've had two friends who were not happy with their teachers at 41 (one in K, one in 1st, but this was a few years ago too so maybe they aren't there anymore...and it's just two people's opinions- so still not that valid a point, I admit) [ Reply | More ]

ok, thanks. we didn't have a chance to tour 11 (it wasn't our fc) and we only just found out about 41, so it has been stressful. [ Reply | More ]

ps41. it has a better track record and more parents who are willing and able to get involved, financially and otherwise (as opposed to ps11 g&t plus gen ed). [ Reply | More ]

I heard PS11s fundraising more than doubled this year. Might have been low to begin with, but seems like there is a lot of upward momentum there. [ Reply | More ]

yes, a few years ago they raised about 30K. This year they raised close to $150K. They know they are going to lose their funding and everyone has stepped up the fundraising. [ Reply | More ]

you're right but I think the economic diversity in the school is worth far more than 300K. There is a downside to having your dc in a school where most everyone is pretty well off financially [ Reply | More ]

it's interesting. i asked a principal at one of the best public schools in the city what the single most important factor was when it comes to a successful public school, and she said money. when i expressed surprise, she said when there's money to make sure the school is running, the teachers can focus on teaching the dcs, and that especially with all the budget cuts, raising money is crucial. btw, her school raises a ton considering its size. that will change big time this year. There are a lot of neighborhood kids going into 11 gen ed this year whereas in the past the school couldn't fill it's spots with neighborhood kids so they gave a lot of variances and bussed a lot of kids in from outside the zone [ Reply | More ]

no, gen ed too. Up until last year's K, they could never fill their gen ed seats with in-zone dcs (or their G&T seats). That is how quickly the school has turned around. This year there were quite a few sibs starting k who didn't make the olsat cut and they are going to go into the gen ed...same thing happened with PS9 a few years ago [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.25.08, 08:27 PM Flag

no offense, but it hasn't turned around because people are choosing ps11. the reason the seats are being filled by neighborhood dcs is because they can no longer get variances to ps3 and ps41. parents are sending their dcs there reluctantly. maybe they will donate more than the people who were bussed in, but there certainly isn't a woo-hoo! rah, rah spirit among the parents i know headed for ps11 gen ed. the gen ed, especially after this year's test, has and will have a real mix of kids, reflecting Chelsea. The increased fundraising year to year (what are they saying above... up from 30K to 60K to 160K?) is showing that. They may not raise as much $ as a wealthier school, but the dedication seems to be there. [ Reply | More ]

OK Penn South Peril mom. FWIW, I know at least 3 families in Penn South who have vacation homes upstate or in the Hamptons. Just because they live in Penn South doesn't mean they are poor. If I could buy a 3 bedroom apt in that location for 40K, I'd do it too [ Reply | More ]

sorry, but there's no comparison between the parents in penn south and the ones at 41 or 234. maybe some of them have vacation homes, but if you spend time on the playgrounds there on any given weekend in the summer, they're packed with people not buying out the calypso in sag harbor. You are right that some people believe 41 is better. And as a matter of fact, I know 3 or 4 people in Penn South who are lying about their addresses and sending dc to 41 so those PS41 has plenty of 'low class' Penn South people among it's ranks! [ Reply | More ]

I have to say that the responses about people living in penn south and being less parents and "low class" based on money is a perfect example of why I would never send my dc to 41 and I am zoned for 3/41. This line of the thread is disgusting. [ Reply | More ]

Same here - that and the fact that the dcs in our bldg at 41 are 1) not rocket scientists, and 2) are from very materialistic families, crystallizes 41 for me as the private school shut-out choice. [ Reply | More ]

first off, i never said people in penn south were low-class. i said most didn't own homes in the hamptons. someone used the low-class slur to try to flame me for something i never said. second, i never claimed to be 41 parent, so why you're trashing me for being one is puzzling. the discussion was about whether or not ps11 was going to get huge infusions of donations now that the demographic has supposedly changed. that's all. g&t at 11. Because, its g&t with small classes and high scorers and the doe states that the curriculum will be advanced in g&t rooms starting next year instead of the same, you will have a better shot at middle schools coming from g&t program, 41 will have large classes next year - 11 small, and if you hate 11 - you can go to 41 next year. They will make room for a high scoring bright child. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree that coming from a G&T matters in any way in the middle school admissions process (beyond what kind of eductaion the kid has gotten there). It's about the kid, the kid's scores, latest report card, and any test/interview/audition. [ Reply | More ]
