My ds is 17.5 mo. and not walking yet, but can cruise furniture ok but not steadily. However, he has great fine motor skills and talks a lot -- can count to 10, repeats almost any word you say to him, can ask for more milk, etc. PT and ped say he has low tone. Ped pushing for more tests and work ups but I say no. Reason to worry? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I think i would at least go for an evaluation. maybe needs an extra push in gross motor skills -- why are you so hesitant if that's what the ped suggests? [ Reply | More ]

We are in PT already for 4 past months. Ped wants ds to be checked out by neurologist which means MRI. I think unnecessary worry and medical intervention is not needed and harmful if there is nothing but slower development happening with ds. [ Reply | More ]

If after 4 mos of PT your DS still isn't walking fully, you should get it checked out more thoroughly. [ Reply | More ]

he didn't crawl until 12 mo. so you can't expect walking so soon. He had reflux and spent a lot of time on his back until 12 mo. [ Reply | More ]

My DD started scooting at 12 mos and started walking 6 weeks later. She never did tummy time. Just saying that your are looking for excuses. I think you should query your pediatrician. What does he think will be found in an MRI that can help your DS? A friend got a diagnosis of mild CP from an MRI, so they changed the goal of her son's PT. It took the pressure off him. What is mild CP? I did quiz ped on what she thought they would find but she was evasive saying it was more to rule any problems out rather than one thing he was sort of tracked for. [ Reply | More ]

mild cerebral palsy. In other words, it wasn't a gross motor muscle problem. It was a brain problem. So his PT was changed to increase the range of motion he could do, rather than go for complete freedom of movement. There are some other issues with CP that they now need to pay attention to. I don't know more about it than that. [ Reply | More ]

What was he like otherwise? Some things make sense in reading about CP. [ Reply | More ]

so he started crawling almost 6 months ago. most kids go from crawling to walking in about 2-3 months. I'm really baffled by your resistance. you'll do your ds far more harm living in denial about some extra help he may need than just biting the bullet and getting to fixing whatever is going on! Well, not worry exactly, but worth an EI evaluation. It's fun! And if your DS qualilifies for some free physical therapy, great! [ Reply | More ]

It sounds to me that your ds perhaps has lower body gross motor delays. If he indeed has low tone, I would get EI. It won't be just the walking, it will eventually be climbing stairs, jumping, running, etc... [ Reply | More ]

if you ignore your own pediatrician, who then would you heed on health issues for ds? listen this isn't about testing your mothering skills, it's about what is best for your child. if he needs some help, be a supportive and responsive mom, do what's best for him. [ Reply | More ]

2 medical professionals who know your ds are suggesting this. The only thing that prevents you from getting this done is hearing bad news. But you can work through that if that happens to be the case. Hopefully, and possibly likely, the results will be good and you will have nothing to fear. [ Reply | More ]

you need to get him tested. have bf who son wasn't displaying the gross motor skills he should have, but was very smart, very social, very early. She finaly got him tested and he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy (sp?). Since he has been diagnosed he is doing so much better! keeping up with peers, etc. I really think you should reconsider the tests. [ Reply | More ]

Go with ped's advice and get ds tested. you have nothing to lose... should they find anything you are catching it early and will be the getting the help ds needs. if they don't find anything, you can rest easier and then start worrying about something else! [ Reply | More ]

My DD didn't walk till 18 months. She was a happy crawler and since I (I've been told) didn't walk till very late, we didn't worry. Did not do PT or anything else. One day she walked, wobbled for a couple of weeks, and then started RUNNING everywhere. Our pediatrician doesn't recommend PT until 18 months and he never pressured us to get tested. If he had, I probably would have...though the fact that I didn't walk until 18 months definitely made us feel better about the whole thing. Laziness runs in our family, apparently. Try not to worry. OK. I was totally against it but you've convinced me to go on with more tests. If he needs a different type of therapy it's worth it to find out. [ Reply | More ]

according to my mom, i didn't walk until 19 months, and i'm fine (but maybe lazy). still, i'd go with additional testing to be on the safe side. early interventions for certain findings could make a big difference. good luck. [ Reply | More ]
