help - have new sitter. dd is 5 years old and she promised me she would let sitter brush her teeth tonight. She refused multiple times so I told her no treats tomorrow b/c she can't eat treats if she can't take care of her teeth. Not sure if that was the right things to do. Have been struggling b/c have new baby, etc. so I know it's a lot of change, but I also am frustrated by her behavior. I hate the thought of her going to bed without her teeth brushed, but she is refusing to have sitter do it. Do I brush them or what?? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

so maybe the nights you have a sitter and you can't do them, the sitter could just watch dd do it herself. it won't be perfect, but she would be happy. [ Reply | More ]

she's five - she will get shiny new teeth soon and you really should pick your battles... [ Reply | More ]

I know, it's just pissing me off -- probably bc I am tired / not sleeping with new baby, so things like this are just getting to me (when they really shouldn't) [ Reply | More ]

I wouldn't worry - if that is the biggest power struggle you have with her. A new baby is really a big transition. Try spending some time alone with her and I bet she will be more agreeable. [ Reply | More ]

yeah, i think i have underestimated the transition to being a big sister. I have a 3 yo as well. Lots of adjusting going on - mom being home from work taking care of new baby, new sitter, etc. [ Reply | More ]

Gotcha. I would think that on the occasional night when sitter is there it's ok for DD to do it herself and you can help in the morning. Happy it resolved itself. [ Reply | More ]

thanks. as I said I am really struggling as I feel like I have been getting more "attitude" / frustration from DD since baby came home, yet on the other hand she can be soooo sweet and helpful. I need to figure out how to better encourage the sweet and helpful b/c I feel like i am just harping on the behavior I don't like, which I know is not right. [ Reply | More ]

Eh - she's 5. It could have absolutely *nothing* to do with the baby (I have an almost 5 yo only who has developed a major 'tude of late). As for encouraging the good I find it works really well when she does something I want repeated to say (with a lot of (forced) enthusiasm): "I really like when you _____ (ask nicely, say thank you, put your dishes in the sink...). The repetition of the positive reinforcement works wonders. [ Reply | More ]
