Is money an issue? If no, and you're in Brooklyn, St Ann's [ Reply | More ]

We are not in Bklyn but live downtown Manhattan. Money is a slight issue. We can pay but we have to give up a lot for it. Also we have younger DC also so tuition will be double in the future. However we are willing to sucrifice if St Anns is better fit for DC. Does St. Anns offer a lot more than Nest(academically and enrichment program and peers)? [ Reply | More ]

i think so. it's considered a very good school. also, i'll probably get flamed, but the dcs i know who are doing well at nest are the ones who are really into puzzle solving and drills and heaps of homework. nerds and grinds. not the arty types. [ Reply | More ]

I posted below. My ds is just finishing K. He enjoys art and they do a lot of art projects in lower school. I think, now that I really think about it... they do a lot of fun art stuff in the lower school. Each of their "celebrations" had several art components to them. [ Reply | More ]

We've been there. Both us and a close friend each had a a DC, same age, both arty, both smart (99% erb). Both wanted St Ann's. They got in, we ended up at NEST+m. Like me, our DC is very distracted type of kid. The warmth and structure at NEST have turned out to be perfect though we didn't know this at the time. Both are great schools and their differences can easily be over-emphasized. One key difference we hadn't thought much about was social class. NEST+m parents are in the main middle class, with fewer lawyers and bankers. As a former banker married to a lawyer I'm aware of eth pros an dcons of this. [ Reply | More ]

Is money not an issue? I love NEST for my son but if money were not an issue and St Ann's was an option... (That said, he loves his art teacher! and I know the school really struggled to find a teacher they liked.) [ Reply | More ]

The problem with St. Ann's is they do not provide the kids much guidance, practically none at all. This is tough on some kids. I would say Nest. [ Reply | More ]

np: This is why I would choose NEST for my dc. I am not impressed with the Saint Ann's kids these days. Admissions seems to be mostly sibs, legs and faculty children with a few celebs and $$ thrown in. Exmissions for college have not been as impressive the last few years. [ Reply | More ]

NEST college exmissions are basically irrelevant since 80% of dcs choose not to stay at NEST for HS. [ Reply | More ]

maybe. but nest is not a good school. if it hadn't been deemed a citywide, no one would be fighting to get in. [ Reply | More ]

"Nest is not a good school". That's just not helpful. And is completely contrary to everything I've heard about it from the many families I know there now. [ Reply | More ]

didn't even bother ranking it after the freak show that was the open house in the fall. have fun believing if it's grim and joyless it must be academically rigorous. [ Reply | More ]

Are you crazy? My d just graduated, heading to Yale. College Board survey just published list. St. Ann's was #2 in the country. Best of any private school in NYC. I don't know any of my D's classmates that are not going to their first choice [ Reply | More ]

I know someone who is their 20s who is a graduate of St. Anns. He said that he wished he had a more academic education with exposure to more subjects. I think you should go with Nest and take all the money you save and enroll your kids in afterschool and enrichment activities. BTW, my dc goes to NEST and the amount of artwork that comes home is overwhelming. [ Reply | More ]

Maybe so but he so regrets not being exposed to engineering and he said that at the time he graduated most of the kids were going to Bard College which is a small Liberal Arts College. He just wishes he had been exposed to more possibilities. [ Reply | More ]

In Kindergarden we are just glad that they are doing artwork and enjoying it. I am not about to critique the quality of a 5 year olds artwork. She is happy with it and thinks its great. Isn't that all that counts? [ Reply | More ]

St. Ann's is a school that is made for very bright and arty kids. If you can afford it, I'd do St. Ann's. It's also very progressive, unlike NEST, which is rather traditional. [ Reply | More ]

I'd definitely go to St. Ann's. I wish we never chose NEST last year. Too traditional and rigid for our creative little DC. [ Reply | More ]
