Depends on which synthetic fiber, if it off-gasses. Even more important, is that a wool rug will also off-gass if it is tufted and has a canvas backing glued on with toxic glue. Really common (Pottery Barn rugs always do this). [ Reply | More ]

plus, I think a lot of rugs are treated with stain-repellent or chemicals [ Reply | More ]

It is so hard to find rugs and carpeting. We couldn't find chemical-free carpeting for DC's room at less than $50/sy. [ Reply | More ]

just take a good sniff... what about an area rug? go to ABC remnants and pick something. They cut to size and bind the edges. [ Reply | More ]

I am the worst at the sniff-test, didn't notice the PBK rug stank for several weeks. I just went to ABC remnants yesterday! They didn't have a lot that were wool, will have to keep trying. I wouldn't put it down at all, but DC's room is freezing, it's an extension, so nothing but ground under it. [ Reply | More ]

I got a wool berber there... definitely ask a sales person to help you and keep an eye on what rugs the guys are bringing in. The one we bought had just been brought in to the room and they were inspecting it. Caveat: wool sheds, especially wool berber. But it's not so bad... [ Reply | More ]

depends on the rug. our wool rug was I think $200-300 + binding ($7/linear foot or something like that) Some remnants are 100, some are 1000. Just depends. [ Reply | More ]

it's the latex backing on cheaper wool rugs. nothing you can do about the odor. our room and board rug does it. it sucks. [ Reply | More ]
