A mother at my dc's school made her child anorexic by witholding solids from her dc as a baby so dc never learned to eat properly... now her child is in school and only drinks pediasure. Completely healthy child, as well. I just find it so strange... [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

how can it be that you "miss the boat" on figuring out how to eat solids and can never learn it later? That doesn't make sense. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know, but this child does not know how to eat solids - will gag, throw them up, etc [ Reply | More ]

dc is anorexic - refuses to eat any solid foods and is basically kept going by liquids and mashed up foods. But has no medical issue that would prevent from eating normally - it is all mental [ Reply | More ]

the mother admits this? to what age did she deny her solids? i think anorexia is a mental disordere, not a feeding disorder. [ Reply | More ]

It is a mental disorder that has been put upon the child by not giving solids after dc first 'rejected" them at 7-10 mos. They didn't keep trying and now dc is over age 3 and cannot eat solid food. [ Reply | More ]

Although there is a condition 'infantile anorexia' it is distinct from anorexia nervosa and is not a mental condition [ Reply | More ]

no what you are describing is not infantile anorexia. [ Reply | More ]

wow you are a bitch. the child is not anorexic nor does the child suffer from anorexia nervosa. anorexia is defined as 'not eating'. this child *is* eating, just not what you think she should eat. [ Reply | More ]

no, this child does not eat, they drink, but they do not eat. I am not a bitch, I am concerned for this child's welfare. [ Reply | More ]

the child is drinking a nutritionally complete food. the child is not anorexic. You have no idea of the circumstances around the child's feeding disorder. There are many conditions which cause a child or adult to be unable to eat solid foods. [ Reply | More ]

the mother has explained the situation regarding their not giving the child food, and claim that the only thing they will now consume is pediasure, which is a substitute for nutritionally complete foods. The child is underweight but other than the parent's forced-unfeeding is healthy. [ Reply | More ]

if it is true, there are places to go to get help for the child, for example St. Joseph Hospital's feeding clinic in Paterson, NJ. it is world renowned for enabling children who can't eat at all (think tube fed because of prematurity, etc) to eat liquids and then solids. [ Reply | More ]

I know this has been suggested to the parents (there's another clinic at John's Hopkins in Baltimore) but they have no desire to change anything. The mother also seems to have eating issues from what i've seen on social occasions, so I think it is a control thing. [ Reply | More ]

MYOB. Maybe the child has a sensory disorder and can't eat solids. [ Reply | More ]

anorexia is a mental disease that is about controlling one's own body. people who suffer from it don't eat because they are under the illusion that they are fat and want to be thinner. not saying that this doesn't sound like a horrible situation, just that the child probably doesn't suffer from anorexia. infantile anorexia can be projected from the parents to the child, along the lines of Munchausen by proxy [ Reply | More ]

it doesn't sound like gossip to me, if the info is coming from the mother to op (assuming op wrote above post) [ Reply | More ]

If you really want to do something, call 311 and report the child. Maybe there is a real issue and parents are reluctant to get help. Otherwise, stop gossiping--you're making it worse for the child. [ Reply | More ]
