The "it's beginning" post (which is now too long to deal with given this site's structure) really woke me up. I had not even really thought about that, although I grew up in that scenario, i.e. upper middle class at private school with friends with a whole different kind of money. For me it led to feeling like I had to keep up appearances and feeling insecure about how much money my father made. That feeling has lasted until now. Education-wise, it's hard to say if I would be where I am now, a lawyer. Who knows, I could have done better or worse in that respect. It did keep me relatively on track bc it was cool to be smart and a good student, but I was really uncomfortable with my family's financial situation in comparison to my friends. I wouldn't want my kids to feel that and would not feel certain I could protect them from it, so I would instead stay on top of them in public school. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

I was in similar situation but was the working class kid not from Manhattan. I didn't like it socially and to the day I graduated I never really felt like I completely 100% fit in, but I definitely did not hide my lack of wealth. Instead pouted it into my studies and extracurriculars and was a standout at my schoo. I'm not sure if I would send my unborn kids there, but I don't regret the experience. [ Reply | More ]
