because of the Supreme Court, I will vote for any Dem nominee. but I still do not yet feel that Obama has addressed my particular concerns directly, nor do I feel he has acknowledged that the longing that many women feel about having a woman in the office is as valid and profound as the longing many people of color feel about having a person of color in the office. waiting to see what he does for VP before I donate or not or campaign or not. np if he does not adequately address your issues and you don't like his VP, who will you vote for? [ Reply | More ]

like i said, I will vote for him no matter what because of the Supreme Court only. the degree of my support otherwise will depend on the VP pick and whether I see him reaching out to us. which, honestly, I only see so far as some vague lip service. I think the lack of appreciation among his campaign for the importance of sexism is pretty profound. i would like to see signs to the contrary. [ Reply | More ]

What would count as "reaching out to us"? Anything besides picking Hillary? [ Reply | More ]

or: my understanding from people who work in his campaign is that he sees sexism as being covered in his umbrella-like discussions of inclusion and lack of discrimination in general, which is why he does not feel compelled to address it specifically. that, to me, is a cop out and denies the insidious and pervasive nature of sexism and its impact on all of us. i would like to here him speak directly us and say, outright, that he understands the profound nature of our longing and our disappointment. nnp I tend to agree with his assessment (assuming what you say is what he thinks) I think all prejudice is bad. Period. I think we are better served by fighting it all instead of having some sort of pissing contest about which group has had it worse. Let's just agree it;s all bad and move on with getting rid of it in all it's forms [ Reply | More ]

nnnp: No, prejudice against whatever group I happen to belong to is both more insidious and taken less seriously by society, so it deserves special consideration [ Reply | More ]

every group could say that though. That is my point. Whatever YOU personally are faced with is the worst. Throughout history, people have oppressed others. No group is innocent and no group worse off if you factor in all of history. Let's just stop worrying about who has it worse. It's all bad. Let's stop fighting each other for victim status and change things! [ Reply | More ]

or: of course it is. that's not the point. I WANTED MY DD TO GROW UP IN A WORLD WHERE THE REALITY OF A WOMAN PRESIDENT WAS A GIVEN. and I mourn that that is not - and very well might not be in my lifetime - the case. all you often have to do to be supportive of those in mourning is RESPECT and ACKNOWLEDGE their condition. NOT tell them to "MOVE ON". [ Reply | More ]

So say he gave a major, dedicated address on the subject, like when he spoke about race after the Jeremiah Wright controversy--but then picked Jim Webb or Evan Bayh for VP... [ Reply | More ]

Obama, however, never made the direct argument that it would be a great change for an African American to be president--it was Hillary who explicitly talked about wanting to break the glass ceiling. [ Reply | More ]

or: the "direct argument" was not necessary. you only have to look to the fact that 90% of black Americans supported him to see that his skin color alone was enough of an "argument". [ Reply | More ]

or: honestly, I am not going to bother answering this because of your use of the word "owe" which to me feels hostile and combative - and is EXACTLY the kind of shit from his supporters that I am tired of dealing with. [ Reply | More ]

nnp please answer her? I think it's a valid question. Take out the word owe and put in whatever you think should go there. I kind of agree with her that Hilary supporters seem to feel that they are owed something. So I would be really interested in what you think about the tables being turned. I'm a supporter of neither if that helps ;-) [ Reply | More ]

or: see my response above. i would really like to see him address the longings of many women to see a woman in the office of the Presidency and the profound disappointment that we feel that this will not be happening now - just even ACKNOWLEDGE it. this whole primary season was historic and different for all of us. there is so much symbolism involved simply in terms of who the candidates are on their face. this was not just a winner/loser, "get over it", "move on" situation like most races. if Clinton had won, i would have expected her - and i think she would have had to - directly address the longing and hopes of people of color in response to Obama's candidacy. I believe I have heard both of them acknowledge the historic significance of the primary at various points. I guess I just don't see what he is supposed to do beyond that. I wish we could all really move beyond race and gender and ethnicity etc etc and just vote on policy. I understand the feelings of seeing someone like yourself in a position of power, I really do, but at some point, we just do have to move on. I was very tempted to vote for Obama in the primary - and I usually vote republican - just b/c of the historical significance. (Sorry - I just don't like Hillary and am kind of pissed that my first opportunity to vote for a woman was her) I think I'm arguing against myslef here. Suffice it to say that I understand the emotions but logically would like to move beyond all of this. Thanks for answering [ Reply | More ]
