Anyone know if both parents have to be Catholic for db to have a Catholic baptism? Dh is Catholic and I'm Episcopalian - neither is very religious but still want to baptize db. I'm wonderting if I'm going to have to "convert," but maybe not because db is it's own person? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

We got married in my Episcopal church because I would have had to convert to be married in his Catholic. [ Reply | More ]

Then why not have the baptism in the Episcopal church. [ Reply | More ]

That would be the other option, but I think he really wants a Catholic baptism and I don't really care at all. For the wedding he didn't seem to care much but now that kids are involved he has more of an opinion. As I mentioned I don't care either way...and would technically convert if I had to, but would prefer not to. [ Reply | More ]

Wonder what God thinks when you stand in his house and pretend to believe something for a situation like this? Would be very interesting to know. [ Reply | More ]

Believe me, I know. But if it's important to dh for the sake of db then I'm willing to do it for that purpose. I think db should at least have opportunity/option to decide for himself. [ Reply | More ]

My wife is Catholic -- I am not. We got married in a Catholic church. (You got bad advice on this one. The RC Church allows interfaith marriages.) Both of our kids have been baptized in a Catholic church. Do you intend to raise them Catholic? That is the issue. You are expected to answer yes to that if you are going to have a RC Baptism. Interesting - we were told I would have to take classes, convert, etc. Yes, we do plan on raising him Catholic. [ Reply | More ]

Interesting...dh's hometown priest in MA, maybe we misunderstood and that was what they required, but he gave us the impression that was the case. [ Reply | More ]

Even Catholics do that. Everyone getting married in a RC church does. That has nothing to do with his not being RC. (Ours was over a long weekend. Seemed like a good idea until about three weeks before I realised it was the World Series weekend.) [ Reply | More ]

no, only one parent has to be Catholic. DH should join a parish, though, if he hasn't already. [ Reply | More ]

He feels strongly that the child should be raised Catholic as he was and therefore given the opportunity/option to decide when he's older what he wants to follow. [ Reply | More ]

Oh, so he is going to go to church every Sunday. (FWIW, I go with my family every Sunday even though I'm not Catholic. I find it relaxing and enjoy the family habit/experience of it all.) [ Reply | More ]

Should not be an issue as long as you agree to raise the child Catholic. It's about the child not you, right? The bigger hurdle will likely be getting your child baptized if your dh is not a parishoner anywhere. I find church secretaries are really a pain about stuff like that. [ Reply | More ]

We plan on raising the child Catholic so he has the foundation and then let him decide once he's able to make that decision, similar to what dh has done. [ Reply | More ]
