For the 1000th time - LL has self contained special ed classes. when you look at scores you MUST make sure you are only looking at general ed scores. Once you have done that, you must also take into account that such a small number of students taking the test affects the %. IF one child is sick and has a bad test, the results are skewed far more than if one child at PS 41 is sick -- get it? [ Reply | More ]

there are only a handful of special ed kids - 10 tops and spread across all grades. i think there were 2 5th graders this year in se this year, so that's only 3.55 of the 58 total 5th graders. [ Reply | More ]

There were 60 5th graders who took the test if you count all students and 52 5th grade "general ed" (non-special ed) students. [ Reply | More ]

As for the other grades, 5 in the 3rd grade and 6 in the 4th grade. [ Reply | More ]

5 in the 3rd grade and 6 in the 4th grade did what? Met grade level in one subject? What the heck is wrong with that? Can't a student be a math guy and not great in English (my dh) or great in English and fine in math (me). To what standard are you trying to hold these elementary school children? Perfection in everything? [ Reply | More ]

No - 5 special ed kids are in the 3rd grade of LL and 6 special ed kids in the 4th grade. [ Reply | More ]

no but it is g&t and to be invited to test for hunter in 6th, your 5th grade scores have to be in top 10% [ Reply | More ]

But is there an underlying perception that a g&t program must be filled with every child over achieving in math and english? If so, its totally insane. [ Reply | More ]

np - G&Ts should actually be filled with kids who score 4s and high 3s. They got in because of their test-taking ability. [ Reply | More ]

They got in based on IQ testing done at the onsite, no written test was ever taken. And not all smart kids end up testing well. [ Reply | More ]

ELA test is a lot harder than the math, and scores are lower in most schools. [ Reply | More ]

Here are the numbers for LL (PS 77) non-special ed kids (the G&T kids in other words): 56% of 3rd graders scored a 4 in ELA and 82% a 4 in math..........62% of 4th graders scored a 4 in ELA and 94% a 4 in math...............44% of 5th graders scored a 4 in ELA and 96% a 4 in math [ Reply | More ]

^^^I don't know if you'd find another school with as high a percentage of 4 scorers. Anderson is probably basically the same - higher in some groups, lower in others. [ Reply | More ]

the kids change too, but wasn't it all in the papers about how scores went up this year? [ Reply | More ]

When the papers say that, generally they're talking about the poorly performing schools doing better. What you are talking about - Anderson or LL kids scoring a 4 in ELA - is really neither here nor there. The kids are doing fantastically really. [ Reply | More ]

But fifth grade scores should be huge focus for Anderson, as most of those kids want a shot at Hunter which uses fifth grade scores to invite kids. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 06.25.08, 09:07 AM Flag

To qualify for Hunter, a dc needs to score in the top 10% of that year - not a straight score cut-off. So if the test was difficult, it would be difficult for all the 5th graders. [ Reply | More ]

can you use the number of children tested to tell us how many actually scored a 3? If you have a class of 2 and one gets a 3 and one gets a 4 - then you get 50%. How did it shake down with a class of 56? [ Reply | More ]

Sure I did - but are you looking at another set of numbers at or are you extrapolating based on your knowledge of the number of special eds? Please point me to the right numbers if they exist- my dc is at lab in G&T and lots of 3s in reading regardless of the small number of special ed children. [ Reply | More ]
