does your school keep the G&T seperate from the gen ed classes? Do they eat luch w/ the gen ed in the same grade? Some of the schools I looked at had the G&T seperated in their own wing and they all ate lunch together never mixing with the gen ed population. I was wondering if this was the norm. PS 9 kids all eat together, G&T & Gen Ed. Classrooms are all grouped by grade...not program. [ Reply | More ]

It's dinner, bath and bedtime for many parents right now . "Separate" is spelled with a middle "a," by the way. [ Reply | More ]

we are at 11 and every effort is made to get the whole grade to know each other. In K, the K classes are in two different wings of the bldg, with one G&T and one gen ed in each wing. When dc was in K (G&T) they did lot lots of activities with the gen ed class next door. This year, field trips were the whole grade, on field day for the whole school all the classes are mixed up and divided into 6 teams. [ Reply | More ]

Nope, at PS9 kids eat lunch and have recess by grade. Most field trips are also by grade, as is field day and other grade activities. basically it is either by grade or a few things by class only, never by program. And the classrooms aren't separated by program either. [ Reply | More ]

also, at least in the younger grades, the whole grade has music together once a week. [ Reply | More ]

There really isn't that much mixing between Gen Ed and GT except in the afterschool. The kids sit next to their classmates at lunch. On class trips, they move with their class. They all have recess together and there's some mixing there, but in general, they're with their classmates. They could be sharing art and music the whole 6 years but don't. [ Reply | More ]

That's a good thing in my book. The full grade music class in the auditorium is a complete waste, and my musical and music-loving dc absolutely hates it. They spend the whole time trying to get the kids to behave. 25 kids is large enough class for music, over 90 is just insane. I can't even imagine how you'd do art in such a large group. I agree those giant music classes are idiotic. What I meant is that the admin could mix up two classes in teh same grade. They could send half of the GT class to art and half of the gen ed class to the same art. The other half of each class could go to the same music class. That way they'd really mix - and in an non-academic setting where they could perhaps appreciate each other, some friendships would form, etc. [ Reply | More ]

NP: That's not music class, that's an assembly [ Reply | More ]

No it is not, they have music twice a week, once in the music room with their class, the second one in the auditorium with the rest of the grade. The all grade music class is a mess. They do some prep for the year end assembly during that class, but even that must be practiced separately by each class because they just can't pull it off with over 90 kids. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't mean it literally. I meant that if you have 90 kids in a room, it's not a "class" at that point, it's an assembly. [ Reply | More ]
