Oh, puh-leeze, when African-American DH and I (white) toured nursery schools last year Admissions Directors dropped what they were doing to rush over to us. It was like being on tour with a movie star. Obviously they must have thought our biracial DC was good enough. [ Reply | More

this is why "diversity" is such a crock. Schools want to see dark faces in the student body--doesn't matter if those dark faces are from UMC families, silver spoons, etc.--as a matter of fact it's preferable. So my family, who came to this country as penniless immigrants when I was a child, doesn't count as "diversity" because we have white faces. [ Reply | More

Some schools actually do care about diversity of family background, cultural diversity, diversity of employment among parents, etc. Of course, that kind of diversity is more appealing to certain kinds of schools than others. [ Reply | More

Actually, talking about coming to the US as a teen, going to school on scholarship, leaning English, etc... I think helped me on the interviews. People seemed interested, and we got into a great school, though, I'm as white as can be. [ Reply | More
