Will my publisher just dump my new book if I decide to sell my next book to another publisher? [ Reply | More ]

NP: Yes. They don't have an option in your current contract? [ Reply | More ]

Probably. Why are you fleeing the first one before they've even published it? [ Reply | More ]

It's my second book. Original editor has left, really unhappy with new editor (sloppy, not involved in marketing like last editor). They have option, but we don't have to take it if another publisher offers a better deal (old editor says she will). [ Reply | More ]

I've never heard of an option like that. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think it's uncommon - or publishers could offer crap deals and authors would be forced to take them. [ Reply | More ]

^^I'm just wondering if a publisher really won't promote a book that they spent low six figures on. It would be a lot of money for them to waste. [ Reply | More ]

Happens all the time. That's not THAT much money in publishing...why throw good money after bad? [ Reply | More ]

Thanks for the advice. I think we're just going to wait to submit the proposal. It's not just lack of attention, it's a series of large errors which cannot be fixed. [ Reply | More ]

Make sure you have a list of the errors and talk it over with your agent (where is your agent in all this?). Maybe you want to keep the book at the same house but switch editors. [ Reply | More ]

My agent is very angry, especially with the lame response from the editor. But she doesn't want to torpedo my book until reviews are in (which I am nervous about, there are huge plot point errors in the catalog and ARC copy). She said if the reviews are good, the publisher won't just throw away my $200+K advance. Everything is just so chaotic compared to my last book - and everyone (me, agent, editor, publisher) agrees this book is better than last. [ Reply | More ]

Depending on wording, OP has to at least show the proposal for the new book to her editor and let them officially pass on it before signing somewhere else. If she embarrasses her editor, she can expect even less attention than she's gotten. [ Reply | More ]
