Did I read this right? Anderson is using Everyday Math? No, f'ing way! NEST rules (I only wish my kid would have been accepted there). [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

Yes, everyday math. I did LOVE Singapore math at Nest+m, one of the reasons we liked Nest+m enough to rank it #2. [ Reply | More ]

and yet, NEST math scores released yesterday were far, far below Anderson and LL. [ Reply | More ]

Everyday math is fine. despite what you read on here, my dc has learned how to multiply and divide. Also, without any outside tutoring, dc scored a 4 on the math test. [ Reply | More ]

I absolutely agree. Most parents don't know how to evaluate math programs. [ Reply | More ]

np and I totally agree. They just jump on the we hate TERC bandwagon with no experience in Terc or no undertanding of the method. Only in NY folks, only in NY [ Reply | More ]

in NY and all over the country. Lots of experts out there who agree that TERC is crap. [ Reply | More ]

I disagree. Ending first grade and dc is doing great on the math tests they've had, but still has trouble with simple computations. We'll have to do some drill and kill worksheets this summer. [ Reply | More ]

what school? not anderson -- no math tests in first grade. [ Reply | More ]

Most top private schools use Everyday Math, too, fwiw. [ Reply | More ]

Not exclusively, they use some components of it but supplement which is sorely needed IMO. I am doing it myself for my ds. [ Reply | More ]

my ds is in public, which is why we have to supplement as the school does not. His best friend is in private and they do supplement quite a bit. [ Reply | More ]

that's why math education at most top private schools is decidedly mediocre. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson uses the newest edition of EveryDay Math and the teachers supplement the program. No math curriculum is the be all and end all. Anderson recognizes where EM falls short for their students and fills in the gaps. [ Reply | More ]

Isn't Everyday Math the math curriculum that actually suggests that you should use a calculator as much as possible? [ Reply | More ]

and this is a bad thing? I gave DC a calculator at age 3, remains a favorite toy. EM and Terc are about exploring and understanding the underlying concepts behind calculations. [ Reply | More ]

eh, hello? Yes, it is. Being able to do calculations in your head trains your brain in a way that is important to grasp mathematical concepts even better. [ Reply | More ]

they learn to calculate in their heads too, but they must show how they arrived at the calculation("show all work"). I am amazed by what they can calculate in their heads from 1st grade, much better than I am and I learned the old-fashioned way! [ Reply | More ]

I wish it were true, but it is not true of my dc and his class. At the end of first grade still need paper for simple calculations, it's not in their heads at all. [ Reply | More ]

Your kid is not getting pure TERC or EM then. Kids rely on paper and pencil and calculator a lot just to get simple things done. That is the problem of using algorithms that go into so many (simple) steps that doing them in the head is almost impossible. [ Reply | More ]

I just wrote an article on Everyday Math, and no, EM does not suggesting using a calculator as much as possible. It does have some lesson plans that use calculators. For example, demonstrating averaging a large series of numbers. And racing the calculator to practice rapid calculation. But it never advocated dropping calculation altogether. [ Reply | More ]

everyday math, with supplementation. yet, the kids really learn math -- my dc could do multiplication in her head by mid-first grade. the school's math scores are stellar. whatever works, imo. [ Reply | More ]

Anderson is using Everyday Math and the teachers supplement intelligently. However, there is still not enough drill and many of the kids hate EDM because it spirals. The kids who are quick at math get it the first time and are bored when they have to re-learn it over and over again. The kids who are not as quick, never get it the first time because not enough time is spent on it ("dont' worry we'll be doing this again, it spirals"). Some get it the next iteration, but others learn the lesson that they never have to get it, because it'll be coming around again. There is a narrow band of kids for whom it is okay, but many kids and parents are unhappy. Furthermore, it absolutely does NOT teach concepts except for really really basic concepts like addition, subtraction and multiplication. It's a mystery as to why anyone thinks this particular group of very smart kids need help with the concepts of addition, subtraction and multiplication. Where conceptual understanding would be useful, the Everyday Math curriculum offers none. DC is taking EDM and I've seen all the homework for years. [ Reply | More ]

Near as I can tell NEST uses EM, too. A first grader there bragged to me that he was "doing fractions." He was disappointed to learn that my DC, in first grade at a "regular" school was also doing fractions. It's part of the first grade curriculum in EM. [ Reply | More ]
