How is the parent body at Anderson in terms of socializing? At my dc's preschool the mom's got together 7 or 8 times a year for dinner and drinks. We also got together for dinner parties and family picnics. There was always a lot of wine at these get togethers. We all became very comfortable with eachother and became friends that we would see socially. i am hoping that A parents will be like this too. Any incoming A parents care to share? how about current A paretns? [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

New A parent here. That's the way my preschool parents were. Lots of wine and chatter. Sign me up at the new place. [ Reply | More ]

That's my dd's grade at Anderson. It's up to each grade to make it happen. We still get together even though some of our kids have drifted from one another. [ Reply | More ]

I don't think you should enter a school looking for friends for yourself it's about your dc and if you find a few friends along the way terrific. [ Reply | More ]

Another new A parent here; I also hope there will be a certain cohesion, but the reality is that some of us live in far flung neighborhoods, have 2-earner families working f/t and younger siblings to care for. DH and I plan on being as involved as we can, as clearly that's a big part of the A tradition and that's a large part of what makes the school what it is, but we also have other responsibilities that we'll be taking into account. Yes, but it's a nice bonus if you get to have dinner with some other parents a few times a year and become friendly. Especially if you live far away, it's great to bond with some parents that live nearer to the school. This helps me sometime work late and pick up dd after she's had play and dinner at a friend's house. I can reciprocate sometimes on the weekend when they come "to the country" to visit me in my borough. [ Reply | More ]

That's a good way of thinking about it! As I said, I really hope we can be involved. I just don't have a clear sense yet of what that means, but that will come with time. [ Reply | More ]

op; I totally understand that some/both parents work, it was like that at pre-school too. The parents that could make it did and those that couldn't found other ways to get involved with parents. I have a younger dc also, so I get that too. it is really hard being a parent, working and taking care of kids. We deserve a break every once in a while too. Can;t wait to get to know everyone! if you are looking for a social life you will find others who are as well - but not everyone is, still being friendly and connected is important for everyone and everone has to make personal decisions on how to make that work. Drinks and dinners eight times a year is a bit much for me [ Reply | More ]

op: Thanks. I wouldn;t expect for everyone to be at every parent social event. i agree, it can get to be too much. [ Reply | More ]

I'm a current Anderson parent. There's a tradition of each class (or grade, if they want) having a parents dinner in the fall. It's really up to each group beyond that if they'd like to see each other more often. As a long-time parent, I fully encourage those who want to do so to make it happen. It really builds that sense of community and the cohesion benefits children, families and the school. [ Reply | More ]

NP and current A parent: some of my closest friends are other parents at the school. but it's up to you -- there are also parents of kids in dc's grade that i wouldn't recognize on the street. [ Reply | More ]
