help her memorize her home and your cell number. That is all she needs. 5yo is too young for a cell. [ Reply | More ]

There is a phone on the market for dc this are. It looks like a toy and only calls home and a few preprogramed #'s plus 911. I think target has one. IMO it is too young for a dc to have a phone. Plus you are sending the message that the adults that are transporting her are not responsible [ Reply | More ]

np: It is much important to teach your daughter how to take care of herself. Talk to her about possible problems and ask her how she would handle them. Let's say, for example, the driver lets her get off the bus at the wrong stop or the wrong school. What is she supposed to do? She needs to know that regardless of whether she has a phone. Again, so she calls you? What are you going to do? You will not be there. Much better you teach her to go into a shop and ask someone to call, or look for a woman with young kids, etc. [ Reply | More ]

If you feel that way then you should not send your dc on the bus. Do you think the driver cannot get her from point a to point b safely or do you think he may harm her. If it is the latter, there is not much a cell phone will do for her anyway [ Reply | More ]

how many kids are on the bus, and does the driver know them all? How much is he paid to have all that responsibility? what if he is having a bad day? what if he is angry at all those spoiled white kids? he is not even legally responsible for her in case she gets of on a wrong stop [ Reply | More ]

Listen you can do what makes you comfortable, clearly there is a market, I am the poster who told you about the kids cell phone. However I have a 10 year old with a cell phone and it is not without problems. He knows it is for emergency use only. He has other dc bugging him all the time to play games on it and he needs to negotiate that, many of whom are his friends. Plus he is fairly responsible for his age and has lost the phone 2 times. Other dc may try to take it. It is just a lot of responsibilty to place on a 5 year old. My dc took the bus for years without a phone. [ Reply | More ]

ITA. There is no way my 5 y/o is close to being responsible enough for a cell phone (she can barely remember to bring her jacket home from school most days). My brother just got his 10 y/o a cell phone because she was flying by herself for the first time. He swears it's only a matter of time before she loses it. [ Reply | More ]

Are you out of your mind? Beyond the fact that you will need to replace it once a week (no 5 y/o I know is responsible enough to keep track of a cell phone), you are being absurd. Unless your DC is getting on an airplane by herself, she doesn't need a cellphone. [ Reply | More ]

so get it with an insurance, or replace it if it breaks, they are cheap after all, what is the issue? a cell phone is not a luxury [ Reply | More ]

It's not a necessity for a 5 y/o. Better to teach her that she should find appropriate adult assistance (cop, mother with DCs, etc.) than tell her to call you and then stand on a street corner waiting for you to show up. You aren't being reasonable, but it's your money and your kid. [ Reply | More ]
