You are obviously not a NYer. Or your kid was not involved. It was truly a debacle especially considering how much we pay in property taxes to live here. [ Reply | More ]

Please. Every kid who scored above the cut-off got a seat. The attempt to make it more diverse failed because just making the testing more accessible is not enough. It takes much more beyond schools and the DOE to fix that. [ Reply | More ]

No they didn't. A lot of kids in the lower 90s didn't get a seat and they listed all possible choices on their applications. [ Reply | More ]

"a lot of kids"? What districts would that be? Are you talking about the districts that historically have been G&T for 1st grade and up only? Or the districts that did not have enough (interested) children to create even one program? [ Reply | More ]

Sure, it was a debacle. The whole point was to make G&Ts more diverse, but in the end, kids in underpriveleged districts lost seats (and some lost entire programs) while even more kids in whiter, wealthier districts that have good zoned options (eg D2 & D3) gained seats (though for some UBers, not necessarily in the programs they would prefer). That' [ Reply | More ]

^^ that's the debacle that was discussed on the show (not how unhappy the typical UB parent is). [ Reply | More ]

NP: I'm in District 6. Our G&T programs were cut in half. We went from 4 programs to 2 programs for the entire District. Only 1 of those 2 programs is even worth considering over a decent gen ed school (which there is only 1 of up here). [ Reply | More ]

that's because less children qualified. [ Reply | More ]

Fewer children, you mean. Yes, I understand the reasons. But the larger perspective, it's a direct transfer of resources out of a District that has too many overcrowded and underperforming schools. All because the entry standards favor children from UMC families with access to high quality daycare & preschool. [ Reply | More ]

and that is by default the definition of a gifted/talented child. How to address this so that every child in our society has the same opportunity cannot be solved by any test or elementary school program of what not. It needs outreach beyond what the DOE can do. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, but equalizing access was exactly one of the pledges we heard from Joel Klein about revamping the G&T program. Have you not been paying attention? [ Reply | More ]

And you took him by his word when he said this? When I heard this the first time I laughed it off and said "Yeah, right!" and ignored it. It's just another politician talking out of his behind. [ Reply | More ]

Because the attempt to make it diverse AND a real G&T (i.e. based on scores) does not really go together. If you want to make a G&T more diverse you have to start somewhere else (like improve poor families' lives, etc. etc.) That said, I think the goal of turning the G&T program into a real one succeeded. kids of the same intellectual level. How to achieve this is debatable but it must involve some kind of testing with a cut-off and maybe something like onsites or other ways of evaluation. Maybe Hunter got it right but you cannot do anything like this for an entire school system. [ Reply | More ]

I think testing 4 yr olds using a standardized test with a format like the OLSAT is absurd though. The city should invest this money into improving early elementary school for kids in all neighborhoods, and THEN test for 3rd/4th grade entry [ Reply | More ]

It's ironic. ACORN, which is a minority parents' group, agitated for the G&T/lottery changes. They wanted everything, across the board, the same for all kids. No onsites or admissions through applications to each school. And it backfired. [ Reply | More ]

Well, I think there was a lot of "behind the scenes" haggling and squeaky wheel stuff that went on, especially in District 3, that made a lot of people uncomfortable. Wasn't that what they were complaining about? To the extent that the new rules put an end to that sort of thing, I think it's an important improvement. [ Reply | More ]
