Bilingual moms, will you start introducing your English speaking 2.5 yr old, to Spanish and French at the same time? Spanish through native speaking nanny and French through mommy and me classes. I think it may be too much. [ Reply | Watch | Flag ]

op: I don't speak spanish unfortunately, I forgot to mention that my DC already has some spanish words and even counts to 10 in spanish just from watching Dora and Diego. I speak French, but did not want to speak to them in French since I am not a native speaker and though it was better to teach them gramatically correct English than not so perfect French to start with. My personal feeling is that unless you use the language in day to day conversation, teaching it is pretty pointless. [ Reply | More ]

I think that if I was set on two languages (other than english) for the kid, than the second one would be a non-romance language. That way they are broadening their skills more. Honestly, I think a third language is overkill at 2.5 yr old. [ Reply | More ]

If they speak two languages well though, they will pick up subsequent ones easier. And honestly, how much is French going to help the kid anyway? [ Reply | More ]

Besides English, dh and I are fluent in one other language by birth and speak a number of others. We decided to only speak English and one other language at home. Ds picked up Spanish at daycare but will start it formally as his 3rd language when he starts k at dual language program. [ Reply | More ]
