I have a friend who has always been very protective of her ds, especially his feelings, which didn't seem odd to me when our dc were babies and toddlers, but now she seems even more that way, and our kids are six. It's making me a little uncomfortable, she spends so much time either angry because of some slight in school or worried that he'll be in a situation (sports, for example) where he won't perform as well as all the other kids and get his feelings hurt. There's a mom like that in our first grade class. She calls other moms all the time about some perceived slight her DD felt that day regarding which ever kid is the topic du jour. She's way way too wrapped up in her kid's emotional life [ Reply | More ]

OP: I think it's that she doesn't have any self-awareness about it that's disturbing. We all have the impulse, I think. It's just that most of us know when we are overreacting and know when to let it go. [ Reply | More ]

Well, yea, I totally know how you feel. This mom called me and told me something and it was all I could do not to laugh and tell her to get a grip. I think I told her I'd talk to my DD about the "incident" and just forgot about the whole thing [ Reply | More ]

Oh, you just reminded me of another mom, a good friend of mine, who had her ds write mine a letter because my ds, apparently, teased him. Yikes. [ Reply | More ]

I understand the impulse in a way, but all the kids tease each other from time to time, and I think the kids are better served if you try to teach them not to take it so seriously. Yes, tell them to express their feelings, but then move on. [ Reply | More ]

I think we are all doing the best we can, and you can never know the whats and whys unless you've walked in their shoes. Support each other, don't trash each other. We are helping the next generation take over society. It is not every man for himself. [ Reply | More ]

OP: I agree with you. I'm am such an imperfect parent. I'm just surprised that my friend is doing this, and it's making it a little hard with the boys. For example, she wants to put her son in a class with kids a year younger, and she wanted to know if I would do that too. [ Reply | More ]
